Why the Ocean has Waves

A creation myth

Why the Ocean has Waves
Katsushika Hokusai

When the earth was still young, the continents started to pull apart and drifted in their own directions. Because of their separation, two beings came across each other. Their initial meeting did not create an immediate spark, but their relationship gradually blossomed. This phenomenon started when Ocean was casually floating along with no particular ambition. He was charismatic, and he knew how to use it to his advantage. Using his irresistible charms, Ocean was effortlessly able to win over any woman’s heart. In the midst of his success, Ocean stumbled upon a challenge.

Shoreline was not a hopeless romantic. She guarded her heart inside a jail cell of countless rocks. When Ocean noticed her for the first time, he tried out his newest pickup line, “My dearest Shoreline, would you please care to join me and bask underneath the sun?” Shoreline disregarded him at first and completely ignored his deep crystal azure eyes. Ocean was slightly taken aback, but persisted by enticing Shoreline again, “You don’t have to cover up your personality. I can sense your inner beauty. But how can I profess my love if you don’t turn to look at me?”

Shoreline lost her temper and scolded him, “Listen here, Ocean. I am not a naïve little girl who allows herself to be swept off her feet by any suave womanizer who walks by. No, I have self-respect. Do you really think that you can trick me with your constant cajoling? I know your schemes. You act like a gentleman, and once you’re through with a woman, you toss her aside. I remember how Sky cried for days after you left her. But you won’t get a single tear out of me!”

Ocean still had a few tricks up his sleeve, “Thank you for finally sharing your lovely voice, but you are misunder-” “I am not misunderstanding anything.” Shoreline stopped Ocean right there. If she knew one thing, it was the conniving way men behaved. “My Motherland taught me well. Rain, my pathetic excuse for a father, only visited her once or twice. After I was conceived, Rain left and Motherland became heartbroken and barren. It was unbearable to watch her go through a perpetual misery alone. She learned this horrid lesson the hard way. But I…I won’t let that happen to me…” Shoreline trailed off as her voice became raspy and she tried not to cry.

Something inside Ocean sparked. He forgot all of his pickup lines and only saw a vulnerable soul imprisoned by the shackles of misery and fear. Ocean was silent for once, and he began to throw Shoreline’s pebbles at her. A smiled bloomed upon her face and she said “Romeo, oh Romeo. Those little tricks won’t help much, but thank you.” Deep inside, Shoreline was touched by how romantic Ocean could be. Ocean was experiencing something new as well; he had actually fallen in love. Day after day, Ocean rose up and splashed Shoreline in an undulating manner. This caused Shoreline’s rigid rocks to become smooth sand. At first Shoreline said, “I’m a reclusive person. All of this is rather over whelming. It just feels so soon.” “I only want my love to reach you.” Ocean told her.

Slowly but surely, the two got to know each other and fell in love. Shoreline softened up and let her true self show in every spec of grain. She finally accepted that one cannot live without taking a leap of faith. Although her appearance changed, she was still shy and reserved. Ocean wasn’t exactly the same either. He realized that true happiness came with commitment, patience, and trust. After constantly returning to Shoreline, Ocean had formed waves. To this day, the most beautiful wonder of the world is the way Ocean refuses to stop kissing Shoreline not matter how many times she playfully pushes him away.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
