DailyMail Australia's article on Iggy Azalea covers her feelings about the "racist" nature of hip-hop slang. The term "Becky" applies to generic white girls (GWGs, if you will) and is even used in Beyonce's Lemonade album.
Iggy feels deeply offended by the oh-so-spiteful term and caused an uproar on Twitter after she essentially asserted that Becky is the worst slur imaginable. As a result, the entire nation of Australia has yet another reason to deem her a "national embarrassment".
The trashcan -- I mean singer, forgive me, I get the two mixed up all the time -- attempts to justify her opinion by saying that it's wrong to call any race a derogatory name; she says it's "not cool" to call "all black men Deshawn" or "all Asian women "Ming Lee."
That point was almost relevant enough to be considered valid, but it lost all meaning when she then tweeted "do you know how many time ppl have called me BECKY?"
The only reason Iggy perceives the term "Becky" as a racial slur is because the word applies to her. Being a white girl doesn't automatically make you a Becky. In fact -- this is actually news to some people -- there's nothing wrong with being a white girl.
However, there's something wrong if an entire slur is dedicated to certain aspects of GWG behavior. And yes, there's something wrong with being a Becky.
So let's set something clear: if the term Becky upsets you, you're probably a Becky. If you're a Becky, you probably call your minority "friends" "Deshawn" and "Shanaynay" behind their backs when you're with other Beckys.
You probably lock your car doors when you see Deshawn walk across the street. You probably almost fainted with shock when you realized that Ming Lee and Shanaynay can speak English very well.
You're probably guilty. But that guilt isn't a result of being a white girl, it's because of you make the same kind of racial assumptions you feel so offended by.
Even if you are a Becky, you're still more likely to have employers, police, etc. take you seriously than a Deshawn or a Ming Lee. While you're foaming at the mouth over the name Becky (OMG is that foam or Starbucks whipped cream), authentic racial slurs and stereotypes kill self-esteems take lives every day.
No one is going to refuse you a job you qualify for or deny you your rights for being a Becky. But that isn't always true for non-GWGs.
To sum up, being a white girl doesn't make you a Becky. Loving Starbucks, having a Pinterest, and even wearing UGGs doesn't necessarily make you a Becky.
Being a prejudiced, unenlightened asshole makes you a Becky. And if we're being honest, why are Beckys even getting upset over hip-hop culture? It wasn't created for them.
The topic is now over, the case is now dismissed, and the "controversy" is officially irrelevant, BECKY.
