Why the #DontJudgeChallenge Is The Dumbest Thing on the Internet

Twitter has been blowing up with another trending challenge. The #DontJudgeChallenge has people taking videos of themselves "before" with drawn-on unibrows and acne, yellow teeth, messy hair and then seconds later showing themselves "after" with a perfectly clean and pulled together look. The whole goal of the video is to not judge a book by its cover because there is something more beautiful underneath it all.

In theory, the challenge may have seemed like a good idea, but it is actually the dumbest thing on the Internet. It makes me me sick to think people are taking peoples insecurities and glorifying that getting rid of them will make you beautiful. Just because you have a unibrow, acne, or anything, it doesn't make you ugly. It makes you human and makes you, well, you. What makes it ugly is the fact that we, as a society, are taking these extremely sensitive insecurities and using them to shame people who can't control it. Is telling someone with chronic acne that having acne is embarrassing making you prettier in any way?

The ability to be confident in yourself and your flaws is what is truly beautiful. As someone who has struggled with acne for many years, I'm shocked people are using it as something to mock others who can't control it. My insecurities don't define me or affect my self-worth and it doesn't affect yours at all! By taking part in this challenge, you are joining millions who are shaming those who are being uniquely themselves. We always talk about how society's expectations are unreasonable and cruel, but we're controlling it.

Accepting your flaws is natural. Like The College Prepster's "My Real Self" post from a couple years ago; See it here which highlights the importance of seeing the beauty in your flaws.

Being loving and accepting of who we are is so important. So be proud of your flaws because they really aren't flaws. There are amazing characteristics that make up the unique, special, and great person that you are. Learn to celebrate your strengths and be proud of who you are, because that is what is truly beautiful, not some dumb Internet challenge started by someone who is clearly so insecure about themselves they needed to publicly shame others to make themselves feel better.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
