With the 2016 presidential election coming up, the topic of who we should make our president is of obvious greater importance each day. After much consideration, I have decided I am “feeling the Bern”, and will be voting for the candidate that I feel has this country's best interests.
I am not writing this to convince anybody to vote for Bernie. I fully understand that this country is run on the right of each and every individual to express their opinions, and no matter which candidate anyone supports, I will fully respect their decision. I am writing this because I want to express why I think Senator Bernie Sanders is the right choice.
Sander's plans are aimed at helping expand the middle class of the country through an agenda that serves the purpose of putting a stop to the outrageous consequences of a focus solely on corporate profits and greed. What he is proposing is not very radical when you consider exactly how much injustice exists in the corporate and political systems that currently stand. Due largely to the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, the amount of greed in the current systems has increased exponentially now that corporations are able to legally buy off politicians – the same politicians that are supposed to be representing us.
Bernie's policies are ones of inclusion and forward thinking. While half of the country is being influenced by divisive and hateful rhetoric, Bernie Sanders expresses nothing more than his concern over the livelihoods of all people. His mission is to make the country better for everyone without a single exception – and this has been his stance all of his life. Being seventy-four, Sanders was raised in the time of a segregated America, but this did not change his internal drive to expand justice for all the people. He marched with Dr. King, got arrested protesting segregated housing in the University of Chicago and has always supported policies that would better the lives of those that need help the most.
Bernie Sanders puts significant focus on the issue of ensuring that every citizen has access to affordable and reliable medical care. He argues that there is no reason for the insurance companies to charge the unbelievable rates they do charge, only to get lesser quality care from the health care providers – and he is absolutely correct on that. We are the only one of the leading nations to not provide universal health care system for our citizens that acts to ensure their livelihood if something were to happen to them. This is a tragic state of affairs that needs to change for us to move forward as a nation.
I am “Feeling the Bern” because I want to see real change from the current system of governance we are living under. I want to be able to live in a country not run by the corporations but by the people, as was originally intended. A country not divided by social, racial, or religious tensions, but one that celebrates and promotes diversity. A country where medical care is offered as a right to every citizen, not only for those that can afford it. Essentially, I want to live in a country that is just, and Bernie Sanders provides this promise like no other candidate does.
