So, this past week I’ve been watching Stranger Things. A lot of Stranger Things. Probably too much Stranger Things, if I’m being honest with myself.
Unfortunately, as happens with all wondrous shows, spoilers abound, and where there are spoilers, there are infinite numbers of people shouting OMFG SPOILER ALERT MUCH!!!!!! THANKS FOR RUINING THE SHOW!!1!
But here’s the thing: spoilers have been proven to enhance joy of a story, not ruin it: when you know the endings, you still have to watch the run up. The emotions you experience are virtually the same when you know a spoiler and when you don’t. In addition, knowing a spoiler can take your focus away from trivial elements of the plot (such as working out the twist) and allow you to enjoy a piece of fiction as a visual or literary experience. If you don’t believe me, have some sources from researchers at UCSD who are definitely more educated than I am.
But science aside, the onus isn’t on everyone else to avoid spoilers to preserve your ‘enjoyment’ of a story. If you want a truly spoiler free experience you’re the one who needs to alter your online presence. If I want to gush to my friends about El dying and how devastating that was emotionally, I have the right to do that. You can always stay off Facebook or install Tumblr savior-because everyone around you doesn’t have to alter their experience to preserve yours.
And, in conclusion: Kevin Spacey is Kaiser Soze, Soylent Green is people, Edward Norton and Tyler Durden are the same person, Snape kills Dumbledore, and the grumpy guy ends up eating the Green Eggs and Ham.
