The music video to Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" is full of fast choreography and a jungle setting to reference the literal meaning of the song title. It also features Minaj hinting that big butts are better and treating Drake to a very special dance.
But we all know what we were looking at during the video: How many types of fruit were spinning on the turntable without falling! (Why didn't that pineapple roll off?)
All jokes aside, Minaj clearly had a great time doing this music video for the Sir Mix-A-Lot cover. And rightfully so. Not many people are aware of this but when the “Anaconda” video came out, it broke the singe-day play record on YouTube with 9.6 million views in 24 hours.
That is a lot of attention for her video. But another thing she didn’t see coming was how controversial it would be to some.
Many viewers deem the video as offensive to women, portraying them as objects. They say it is very revealing of Minaj’s rear end and should have an age limit on the viewing - criticism that Minaj has heard a lot of while tweeting photos promoting her new upcoming album The Pink Print.
Criticism that Minaj says she doesn't understand in light of other women doing the same. Why don’t Sports Illustrated models get any smack for their revealing photos in bikinis? When she does so and calls it art, why do many people deny it?
This hints at people insulting her for her size. Many of Minaj's fans say that she is embracing it and should be proud of it. She isn’t trying to sell herself but rather show to others that you can embrace your body for what it is.
People are also calling this video "anti-feminist," seemingly forgetting what the word actually means. Merriam-Webster defines it as "the belief of political, economic, and SOCIAL equality of the sexes." If men can advertise shirtless and in their underwear, why can't the woman at least put on her underwear with her breast still covered and show it off? Women should wear what they want to wear and still maintain respect for themselves.
Still others talk about Drake's presence in the video and what it's building toward. Minaj stated, “…it’s always good to do that stuff with Drake because we’re so close”. She knew that he wouldn’t take it in the wrong direction and that it was fun. Is she implying that it's possible for women to want to dress in short clothing and dance with men without intending or wanting to sleep with them?
Nicki Minaj expressed how quick people can assume and judge about your figure rather than accepting you for who you are. How horrible that must be for women's rights...
