Sure, sometimes you feel like having a sister is closer to a curse. When she steals your clothes without asking and doesn’t replace them, when she uses the last of your favorite lipstick or when you feel like she would do anything just to annoy you. I’ll be the first to say that I’ve been there. Whether it was screaming at my little sister for bothering me when I had friends over or yelling at my older sister for not letting me hang out with her when she was with her friends.
But for everything that she does that makes you wish you had brothers instead, she does a million things more to prove that sisters really are a blessing.
There is nothing in the world I would rather do than lie in bed at two in the morning with my sisters, laughing about boys and something our mom had said, sharing a box of Girl Scout cookies and some popcorn. And now, spending my first semester away at college, I’m constantly reminded that distance really does make the heart grow fonder. I miss my friends, and I make sure to Facebook-stalk them regularly, but it’s the daily FaceTime calls and Snapchats and 10,000 text messages from my sisters that I look forward to the most.
Your sisters know how to make you laugh when all you want to do is cry and cry from laughing so hard. They make the bad times good and the good times even better. Your sister is there for you when you fail a test and don’t know how to tell your mom, when you get your first boyfriend, she’s there to sneak you in to an R-rated movie or go with you to get your nails done. Sisters are a built-in best friend, but you know the two of you will never drift apart. While friends come and go, your sister is always there. Sometimes, she might even seem like a third parent, but you know she only wants the best for you.
There are times you couldn’t be more different. While you like pink, she likes purple. You want to be an actress, and she wants to be a doctor. You like Chinese food, she likes Mexican. But you’re also more alike than you would care to admit. You finish each other's sentences more often than not and frequently show up to family functions either wearing the others' clothes or practically the same outfit. You roll your eyes when your mom calls you by your sister’s name and would never admit you secretly find it funny.
Your sister makes you wish for your own daughters some day, and you hope they’ll be as close to each other as you are with your sister. Because, while she seems to have a habit of getting on your last nerve, she’s the only one that you want there for you at the end of the day.
