Music has undoubtedly transformed itself over the last century. Even by comparing the music now with the past couple of decades, you can see a tremendous difference. The messages pop music has conveyed over the years has changed with time, but some messages remain the same as before or have a hint of nostalgia for simpler times in the past. We long for that and in a sense, I think music has become reminiscent at times and wants to remember what life used to be like. Sia's "Cheap Thrills" is one of those songs.
Now, don't let the modern tempo, singer-songwriter, or overly produced sound of this track prevent you from hearing me out on this one. If you can adequately examine the lyrics behind the song's presentation, you may find that you get what the underlying message means. You may still think it's just another catchy pop track trying to tell you to dance. However, if you look at the lyrical music video, I think you can see that message deeper message will be portrayed right before your eyes.
The live dance show setting of the music video takes you back. The fact that this video is set in a different time certainly helps one to put themselves in that more simplistic era, but I think you can also certainly hear her longing for this time through her lyrics. When she says, "I don't need no money. As long as I can feel the beat," she means that our world has become so materialistic and money-hungry that we have forgotten to dance, laugh, love, and live. When she says, "Come on, come on turn the radio on. It's Friday night and I won't be long," it not only reminds me that radio used to be everything before television, but that back then many lived for Friday nights at the dance halls when dancing, socializing physically with others and just having a good time was just so prevalent in society. When she sings it, I can feel a different time being portrayed in my mind.
Whenever I hear this song this summer, I will go back to that era in my head. Not just because Sia in this track collaborated with and magically unearthed wherever the hell Sean Paul was this whole time, but because we often don't remember that money really isn't everything and that having a good time while living your life is. We don't remember that dancing, laughing, loving and socializing with each other is priceless and can relieve so much more stress than costly alcoholic beverages and a DUI on a crazy night. Even if you're not much of a dancer or singer, this summer I hope this song plays on your radio and you think of a time much slower and simpler than the one we're living in now is.
