Yes, what you've heard is true… The rooms are tiny, your dog at home probably has a bigger room then you. And you have to share it with another person who you may or may not know. You share a bathroom with 100 people you barely know. There are bugs. The cleaning staff probably doesn't clean as regularly as they're suppose to along with numerous other things... So why do people live on campus? Well there are a few reasons.
You learn to deal with people.
Living on a hall with 40+ girls is a really interesting experience. You'll definitely meet people you love and you'll meet people you don't love, but you learn to deal with it. Yes, a group of 20 people might loudly stumble past your room at 3 in the morning and that's something you'll just have to deal with. It might even make you a heavier sleeper (it did for me)!
There's always something going on.
It's almost impossible to sit in your dorm all year and not find something to do. Whether it's your RA inviting all the residents to the cookout right outside your dorm, or a group of girls going to a party, if you step into the hallway you're bound to find somewhere to go and people to meet.
Convenience.
Most of on campus living is very central to classrooms, dining halls, the gym, etc. So living on campus is not only generally cheaper, but also way more convenient. If you wake up 10 minutes before your class you can run to class and maybe get there on time, where if you lived off campus and had to rely on a bus system, you might as well go back to sleep.
It's safer.
Living on campus is also a lot safer. Walking back late at night it's safer walking to an on campus dorm where there's campus police to assist you if something goes wrong, rather than going home to somewhere off campus.
You're guaranteed to meet some of your best friends.
I lived in a very central, hall style dorm last year and I loved it. And I also met some of my best friends there. I remember passing them in the hallway every so often and then eventually we became friends. You also get close to people when you share a small bathroom with them.
I spent 2 years on campus and while I did complain about the cleanliness of the bathroom or having a roommate, it really is an experience that you can't forget. Plus you get to wake up every morning, walk outside and see the beautiful campus that you live on, take advantage of all it has to offer!
