Why You Should Definitely Listen To Fall Out Boy's New Album

The sweet, sweet, rock and roll.

Why You Should Definitely Listen To Fall Out Boy's New Album

It all started in 2003 with the first album Take This To Your Grave. Before that there had been mix-tapes and EP's, but that album is what started it all. Then Fall Out Boy released top hits, including Sugar, We're Going Down and Dance, Dance. This album, of course, is From Under The Cork Tree. After that, they had a slew of hits on their next two albums: Infinity On High and Folie A Deux. After these two releases, the world heard nothing from the band. That was until 2013, when FOB riveted their fan base by releasing Save Rock and Roll, and now they have done it again with the release of their sixth album, American Beauty/American Psycho.

1) Irresistible

"You look so Seattle, but you feel so L.A."

If there is any song that I want in the background when I walk into a room it is this one. The trumpets blaring, the thick beat in the background mixed with Patrick's perfect vocals; there is nothing better. It is a strong way to start what I consider one of my favorite albums they have created. You could say it is "irresistible."

2) American Beauty/American Psycho

"You take the full, full truth, then you pour some out."

This track is one of the heavier songs (Novocaine is right up there with it), but it's nice to see FOB branch out to their roots of rock. There was a lot of dispute on whether or not their last studio album was actually rock, but this song proves they are. In this up-tempo song, you get a feeling of a punk garage band. It is a great song to just dance like a fool to.

3) Centuries

"The darkness that you felt, I never meant for you to fix yourself."

The first song most people heard from this album was Centuries, and it was a strong single to release. This song will be remembered for centuries. If you are looking for a new confidence boosting jam to sing along to, this is it. The lyrics are on point, the track is catchy while still carrying a rock tune. You could hear this song almost anywhere and it could blend into the background. Personally, I love to listen to it before leaving the house, just to remind myself I am awesome.

4) The Kids Aren't Alright

"I’m not passive, but aggressive ,Take note, it’s not impressive."

The nostalgic whistle, the mellow beat, the relaxed bass. This song makes your mind wander into the past. The vocals are calm and present the lyrics in a beautiful way. If you are looking for a song to make you think and feel, this is the song for you. This is the song that you hear and think about all the good and bad in your life.  Everything about this song is a beautiful way of representing how people feel when looking back at things and people you've lost.

5) Uma Thurman

"And I slept in last night’s clothes and tomorrow’s dreams, But they're not quite what they seem."

You really want to dance like Uma Thurman in this song. The funky beat is brilliant and makes you want to get up and dance. This is a roll-down-the-windows-in-your-car-and-blare-it kind of song. It is definitely one of the sassiest tracks on the album, and if you understand the reference, you know how clever and witty the chorus is.

6) Jet Pack Blues

"She’s singing 'Baby come home' in a melody of tears, While the rhythm of the rain keeps time."

There is something about this song that strikes a chord deep inside my soul. I'm not sure if it is the music or the lyrics, and to be honest, it is probably both. The way the verse leads to the chorus is perfect. This is probably one of my favorite tracks on the entire album. It is so simple and brilliant. It is a classic, in my book. And a bonus is how incredible the line "while the rhythm of the rain keeps time" is. That makes this song poetry.

7) Novocaine

"If you knew, knew what the bluebirds sang at you, You would never sing along."

The second most traditional rock song on the album has to be this. The sound reminds me very much of Infinity On High, which is not a bad thing at all. It is classic Fall Out Boy with an edge that we haven't seen in recent albums. Once again, they managed to create a song that is not only musically appealing, but the lyrics are very smart and catchy.

8) Fourth of July

"I said I'd never miss you, But I guess you'll never know, May the bridges I have burned light my way back home."

In a song that sounds like a creepy walk home at first, you end up finding a phenomenal song about people of the past. With lines like "I'll be as honest as you'll let me" and "And all my thoughts of you, they could heat or cool the room." This is, in my opinion, the best song of this album. I probably think this because it hits home perfectly for me. Burning bridges, people of the past ... It is a confident reflection of a past relationship.

9) Favorite Record

"You were the song stuck in my head, Every song I've ever loved, Played again and again and again."

You hear this song and think of that person. You know that person, the one you love, or have a crush on, or just find very, very attractive. This is for them. The person who you want to spin for like their favorite record. Who doesn't want to be compared to the song stuck in someone's head? How accurate can a metaphor be? The person who is constantly there and you can't get them out, well, they have a soundtrack now. And it happens to come in the form of this epic song.

10) Immortals

"Sometimes the only payoff for having any faith, Is when it's tested again and again everyday."

Something about the Asian flair in this song makes me feel like I am immortal, which is (cleverly) probably the point of this track. When you pay attention to the lyrics, you can understand the fight for the person. It's all about how with the person you could be immortal in your mortal life. How amazing is that? I will live with you forever now Fall Out Boy, don't worry.

11) Twin Skeletons (Hotel in NYC)

"I wanna throw my hands in the air and scream, And I can just die laughing on your spiral of shame."

The end the album with the song that reminds me most of classic Fall Out Boy. Something about when Patrick sings "on and on and on" I feel like they are really back. As the album comes to a close, you get the sense that with so many strong tracks this can't be the end. In Twin Skeletons you can see they have mastered their new sound; they have really hit their sweet spot for music. Catchy and rock, not too heavy, but just heavy enough. The vocals are strong, and the game is locked tight. Just remember to start from the top again when this song ends.

So I don't know if you are a die hard fan, a new fan, or just someone who enjoys checking out new music, but this album is one to pay attention to. With smart lyrics and a great, polished sound, Fall Out Boy is officially back, and we should all rejoice by listening to every song over and over again. It's been just about two weeks, and I still can't stop listening to it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
