Why Scary Movies Are So Frustrating To Watch

...and why we can't get enough of them.

For us minor thrill seekers, nothing is better than being cuddled under a blanket (no matter how hot it is) and watching a scary movie. Jump scares and bad acting are half the fun. Who could resist peeking out from under the blanket after you had to hide your face? Being scared is great, but the best part of a scary movie is also the most frustrating.

The most fun you have watching a scary movie is yelling at your TV and the characters for their terrible choices. Nothing is more annoying than when the girl trips and doesn't get up fast enough. Or when the family just has to buy the creepy old house in the middle of nowhere. Although, without these seemingly obvious dumb decisions, there would be no movie. Every time you sit down to watch a scary movie, there is the battle between wanting to shut it off and not being able to stop watching. Here's why scary movies drive us crazy, but also why we can't get enough.

We all find ourselves asking the characters why they would do something so stupid. "Why would you pick up the phone after getting more than once creepy call?" Then our aftermath thoughts come in. "Well, I have to find out what happens after she answers." It's this constant back and forth we can't stay away from. Here are some of the thoughts that always cross our mind while watching a scary a movie.

"Once your house shows signs of possession, why would you stay there?"

"Well now I have to finish watching the ghost tear your life apart so I can say I told you so."

"Girl, do not stay home alone!"

"Dear teenage couple, shouldn't you know by now not to go make out in the woods?"

"Don't open the door! What ever made the noise is going to get you."

"See I warned you. Now you got red eyes and a raspy voice."

These are just some of the many thoughts that make us burst while watching a scary movie. The next set of frustrating things is when a character doesn't see the shady activity going on right in front of them. They need a good wake up call and some advice. The dog is barking at the air for a reason. Once your kids start to talk to a mysterious imaginary friend, it is time to bolt. That picture frame did not fall off the wall by accident. No, you should not investigate the abandoned asylum. All you can do is face palm for them because we all know we're actually glad they did this.

Scary movies may drive us crazy, but we just can't peel our eyes from the screen. We can't help but kick back with our popcorn and let it happen. We all know it was a mistake to buy a creepy doll from a garage sale, but we want to know what it does to you. Good entertainment ropes you in no matter what. Although, we do think you should be smarter than to keep those weird, old video tapes in the house. As ridiculous as we complain they are, we can't tear away from watching the twisted plot unravel. The creepy chaos that comes with scary movies will always rope us in.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
