Why Roy is the Good Guy in "The Office"

7904

I have yet to meet one person who does not like the show, The Office. It’s funny, awkward, and different from most other sitcoms, but the most important part of the show’s astounding success has been its relatable and loveable cast of characters.
Maybe the most endearing character on  Maybe the most endearing character on the show, Jim Halpert, could be considered everyone’s favorite. But I have a different mindset. In a real-life scenario, I think I would probably hate Jim. The real good guy of The Office is Jim’s wife’s (Pam) original fiancée, Roy Anderson. Think about it. Jim pulled a robbery. While watching it on TV seems awesome, we, the audience, have no choice but to root for him because he’s the main focus of the series. Roy, Pam’s partner since high school, gets no screen time and therefore we don’t know enough about him to really care.
But what if we were in Roy’s situation? What if we had a boyfriend or girlfriend that we had been dating for several years only to get him or her stolen? I think I would be pretty mad. While the show depicts Roy as a bad guy for trying to hit Jim (upon finding out he kissed Pam) in a particular episode, I actually think he reacted pretty reasonably. I mean my girlfriend would like to think that I’d come after any guy who put the moves on her.
And sure, maybe you can argue that Jim and Pam had some great connection that she lacked with Roy, but she’s clearly very happy with Roy (enough to be engaged to him for several years); she just doesn’t get enough time with him because he works in a different location.
But even if you can’t accept the true crime that is stealing one guy’s girl, you have to see that Roy is a pretty good guy while Jim is kind of a tool. Roy mingles with Pam’s coworkers very rarely throughout the show, but when he does he does so in a pretty amiable way (with the exception of Michael Scott, but he’s the annoying boss so who can blame him?).
Jim constantly antagonizes these same coworkers, particularly Dwight, and you can tell he thinks he’s better than most of them—and he lets it shows in his smug and arrogant comments he becomes frequently known for.
At the end of the day, Roy is just a pretty humble warehouse worker who tries to get along with everyone who doesn’t touch his woman, while Jim is a bit of a prick. Who would you rather see the sweet and loveable Pam spend her life with?
But the real kicker comes in the final season of “The Office”, where we see Roy one last time. In this episode, we see Roy, the owner of his own very successful gravel company, getting married. He is clearly very rich and ambitious, and has a beautiful wife that he sings and plays the piano to, a skill which he learned specifically for her.
Meanwhile, Jim has turned down promotions, new company opportunities, and the chance to make something of himself to remain the same lowly paper salesmen he was when the show started.
While Roy clearly is a go-getter and the ultimate romancer, Jim is still stuck doing the same stuff with Pam, without ever doing anything as sweet as learning how to sing for her. I guess he’s still too busy pulling pranks around the office to try and convince his coworkers that he’s better than all of them.
I still love “The Office”. I’ve probably seen each episode about 100 times. But the fact that Jim is portrayed as the show’s main protagonist when he would be considered a huge jerk in real life will always bother me. I will always be Team Roy.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
