The first words on the Perfect365 website are, “Perfection in one tap.” According to this app, they know exactly what perfection looks like, and apparently it isn’t you ... “Look like a celeb in your photos” are the last words on the website.
Recently, this app has become rather popular, with every Instagram picture looking less and less like our real selves, perfect skin and flawless features shock people who know what we actually look like. And as I scroll through my personal Instagram feed, I notice my friends looking more and more “perfect”, whatever perfect really means.
The editing options on Instagram are already known to change a person’s natural appearance, along with the countless additional editing apps available. But Perfect365 takes things even farther with changing the size of one’s eyes, smoothing skin, and getting rid of blemishes — the list goes on. This app even lets you apply makeup, so what’s the point in even getting dressed up anymore? Just sit with no makeup on, take a selfie, and then apply everything you need with Perfect365 — sounds easy enough!I am guilty of using the Instagram filters, but it shocked me to see how much people are willing to change about themselves. We live in a society where being perfect is so important, that we are willing to risk looking nothing like we do in person, just so our friends will comment that we look pretty.
We are our own worst critics, and this app is ruining our natural beauty that we used to own when these sort of applications didn’t exist. I don’t know about you, but I would much rather have someone say, “Wow! You look so much prettier in person!” than “She doesn’t look as good as she does in her pictures.”
We will always care about what other people think about us — it’s human nature. We want to look good because looks matters ... I’m not naive about this. But what I don’t like is how instead of bettering our lifestyles, we just take our finger and shrink our waists with an app. A healthy lifestyle is so important, but Perfect365 adds to the desire that people feel to reinvent themselves into a person they probably will never be. Making our eyes bigger is just unrealistic, or shrinking our waist to dramatic proportions ... your rib cage can not shrink, and these expectations are becoming ridiculous.
As a young woman, there are most definitely things I would like to change about myself. But I want to actually change them — in person — not just on Instagram. I want to walk down a street and feel good about myself, not scroll through my pictures admiring my “perfection.” There is a huge difference between feeling accomplished by hard work at the gym and that two seconds of happiness a comment gives us.
On the Perfect365 website it says, “Collect your best creations and add them to the ‘Favorites’ folder” because that’s what you become: a creation. Be yourself imperfections and all. Life would be pretty boring if we were all “perfect”.
