Our generation is very well known to be more technology oriented, obsessive over social media, lazy, slackers, have a lack of perspective, motivation, etc. But the truth is that with the help of technology our lives have become easier and, truthfully, this does make it easier for us. It is totally normal for older generations to criticize younger generations, as we do tend to improve and evolve in different aspects; whether it is technology, architecture, education and many more.
Our elders today must have have elders who were their critics. Our generation may be lazy but the amount of information we have and the access to all the information has allowed us to gain and understand knowledge faster than the amount of work and time our elders spent to gain the same kind of information. Can you imagine life without internet? I sure can't. You would have to go to the library and read tons of books just to find what you might be looking for.
Today our younger generations have a voice. We speak up about what we believe is right. Our generation is less likely to be racist, ignorant, superstitious and hateful. With the evolution of education we have progressed into a more accepting nature. Children pick up on racism, ignorance and such negative ideas because of things that they are taught in school and what they learn from parents.
If the culture inside a household consists of a mother who only cooks and a father who works a lot, then it is likely that the child will acquire an idea of a woman differently than a family who has two working parents. It is the same with racism and other negativity. Similarly, girls also learn about women through media. Media is still a controversy when it comes to understanding what ideal beauty is. Hence, girls have been obtaining wrong ideas of what a woman should be.
A woman's voice is still undermined, spoken over and not given much importance in what they have to say. A new word has emerged called 'mansplanation', which essentially means to comment on or explain something to a woman in a condescending, overconfident and often inaccurate or oversimplified manner. Mansplanation happens often in the media. Until recently, with the help of campaigns from different companies or brands, the idea of a perfect woman is changing and imperfections have now become perfections.
Yet another improvement in society, but our generation is still criticized. Our minds have been manipulated by technologies for a while now, but growing up with cell phones and televisions by our side is somehow worse than growing up in a sexist community and with no civil rights. Our generation is still fighting the corrupt and the wrong. Social media is one of the platforms where we do get to raise our voices.
There is always a flow of communication around the world through social media. It must have been really tough in the past to be heard from around the world. Today, there is competition because once someone discovers something new, there is someone else trying to be even better; which again, results in improvement. Generations in the past had a slower flow of information and communication and therefore improvements were prolonged.
Relationships in our generation are not the same anymore, divorce rates are higher, hook up culture is more popular, and less people believe in love. But just because these are all true does not mean our generation is bad. Women work more and men work as well. It is hard to have families when both sexes in a family work.
Of course, in this case authority becomes problematic between two sexes. There are also many couples who are respectful of each other's careers and that is what is ideal in the modern days. Equality is what is important. Couples are more open minded about what is right and what to prioritize in relationships now as we do continue to evolve into a better world. Hopefully in the future when the two sexes do continue to be more equal and respective of each other's decisions and careers, divorce rates will go down again, just like before.
There still needs to be many more improvements in our society. There is still corruption and our generation is not perfect but we are also not the worst. Our generation has brought a lot of improvements and many more to come! So let us stop criticizing and start appreciating!
