Like most college students, Netflix became a part of my life. I was obsessed with watching all of the TV shows that I had missed or movies I never got to see in theaters. Binge watching became a regular past time.
I have watched countless shows and movies on Netflix but there is one TV series that outshines all of the rest, Orange is the New Black. I had heard people talking about it, and even though I wasn’t sure if I would like it, I still decided to watch the first episode. My love for the show was immediate. I was hooked like so many other people that had started watching it before me. I began to wonder though, what is it about this show that draws so many people, why is this show one of the best shows I had ever seen? Of course the writing is spot on and is what makes the show what it is, but here are six other reasons why Orange is the New Black is one the most addicting shows on Netflix.
- The theme song.
Let’s just begin with the opening song to every episode. I’m obsessed with it. Even though it is very long, I listen to the whole thing through every time. It will never get old. Regina Spektor, you are awesome. - The cast is almost entirely females.
This is for obvious reasons; the show does take place in a female prison. But let’s face it, women are so entertaining. They are dramatic, crazy, and hysterical. They have complex emotions that are almost impossible to figure out, which makes for great TV. - It makes
you question stereotypes.
If you watch this show you know what I mean. There are some women in the prison that I would gladly be friends with. Their back stories are all so intricate, and it gives you insight into their problems and why they ended up in prison. Granted, it is a TV show, and there are parts that are fiction, but Piper Chapman is based on the real Piper Kiernan. So whether it’s fact or fiction, the show provokes you to rethink stereotypes, which is not something most shows do. - The doomed love stories.
When something is bound to end horribly, it is almost impossible not watch. From Daya and Bennett to Piper and Larry, there are so many problems that you need to find out how it ends. The more problems they face, the more addicting the show becomes. - The emphasis on sexuality and relationships.
Obviously there are lesbian relationships and transgender individuals in this show. The show is so open to it, and doesn’t hold back on any controversial subject matter. There is confusion and frustration and the viewers get to see how all the characters’ temptations affect them. - And lastly, Crazy Eyes.
I have to admit it, I love Crazy Eyes. She is one of the most complex characters on the show and has the absolute best one liners. Her “chocolate vanilla swirl” line still cracks me up.
