Coming into college four years ago, I pictured my life so differently than how it has turned out to be. I always thought that with graduation coming so soon, I would have my life together in a perfect picture: a job lined up for next year, a great guy by my side, and holding a job that would lead me into my career path.
Fast-forward my 18-year-old mindset to my 21-year-old mindset, and things are very, very different. The past four years have taught me a lot of things, but mostly, that it is perfectly OK to have your life in a mess of shambles as you slowly await your college graduation.
There’s a saying that goes, “Don’t judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,” but I can tell you that if you’re 21 and just about to graduate, everyone around you is just as confused and indecisive as you are, so save yourself the walk and trust me on this.
I’ve learned that it’s OK to change your major as many times as you want. Your major should be where your passion lies so that you truly enjoy going to work every day. If you claim a major and end up hating it, change it! College is the place to discover yourself even more deeply than you did in high school. It’s a stepping stone in life to help you become successful and happy in your life.
Changing your major doesn’t make you any less successful, it just means you’re taking the time to truly figure out your likes and dislikes within a career path. With graduation approaching for most of us, we realize that we’re graduating with degrees, yet we still wish we chose another path (this is what grad school is for).
If you’re in these shoes, taking a year off next year may be a great idea to try out different jobs and see where your passion really lies. Is it within the degree you’re graduating with soon or is it within something completely different?
Either way, you’ll figure it out and you WILL be OK as well as successful in whichever career path you may choose.
