New Year's is always known as a time of renewal and fresh starts, starting with a kiss and shouts of joy for the dawn of a new possible life. It is always an exciting time for everyone, full of parties and celebrations with family and friends. The moments leading up to the ball drop of the new year are a time for reflection on the past year and your mistakes. As the glistening ball drops into a new year, it serves as a visual representation of the cleansing path of the impending new year. Although, this is very therapeutic, it is often only used as an excuse for a good party (not that that can be stopped or blamed).
But if everyone stopped to think about it, the separation of years is completely insignificant. Time has no foreseeable beginning or end. It just continually goes by without want or need, constantly consuming our lives. Whether or not we dignified the separation of years, the same amount of time would have passed right now. It's just something for our puny human minds to be able to wrap around that we even need the increments of time.
Therefore, why is the beginning of a new year known as a time to change everything going wrong in our lives? Time is completely mind boggling concept that can not have limitations. Our life is an ongoing battle that has great times and awful times, but needs not be broken up into those distinct pieces; the whole is always what needs to be regarded.
Life is always continuing, and should always be improved upon. When you aren't happy with something going on in your life, all it takes is a simple change, without thought of repercussions (within reasonable bounds) and always with wants and needs in mind. Life should not be forced to change or alter simply because of a social or cultural tradition. This is exactly why New Year's resolutions are only known for failing. We choose these resolutions at a forced time, not when we realize our mistakes and deliberately want to take the time to change them for the betterment of our lives.
So while many of us make these resolutions, they are very rarely carried out. I urge every person that reads this to rip up their resolutions. If you know you won't do something, there's no point in putting that pressure on yourself. You won't ever change until you truly and legitimately want to.
Take time and sit down to think of your life and the things you enjoy in it. Keep everything that has to do with those things the same. Then, think about everything that is awful about your life. Take the time to reasonably consider cutting them out of your life. Every person on this planet has a right to be happy, and that happiness is completely attainable with just a few changes (whether those changes happen at New Year's or not).
