Why Netflix Is Not A Waste Of Time

Contrary to popular belief.

Why Netflix Is Not A Waste Of Time

With winter break suddenly upon us, we have an absurd amount of free time on our hands. How we spend said free time is dependent on the individual, but I know I am not alone when I say I spend the majority of my open hours on Netflix. Oh, what a wonderful, welcoming world Netflix is. To some, the overindulgence of Netflix is considered a waste of time. They only focus on the glued-to-the-screen aspect of watching TV shows and the alternatives that would be a better use of our time. However, what they don’t realize is that beneath the surface, something can be gained from Netflixing (can we make that a thing?). Within all of the numerous series I’ve completed, I have received important life lessons, which were taught by inspiring, relatable characters. Netflix increases laughter, knowledge and individual growth, making it certainly not a waste of time. Here are a few shows to prove that.

Friends.

I am a firm believer that every person needs to watch Friends at some point in their life. Not only is Friends remarkably addicting, it is a gateway into the frequent conversations and inside jokes people have about this one-of-a-kind television show. All 236 episodes are filled with life lessons, heartening stories, and characters to fall in love with. By the end you really feel like you are a part of the clique. Ross, Rachel, Joey, Phoebe, Monica and Chandler are six definitive reasons that Netflix is time well spent.

Scandal

I have never been more empowered by a woman than I am by Olivia Pope. Her drive, intelligence and bad ass attitude makes her the ultimate face of girl power. As a female, I commend shows that give women abundant power and shine women in a positive light. Scandal does both of these things, while inspiring me to work harder and giving me incentive to become more engaged in politics.

One Tree Hill

I watched this series my senior year of high school and have seen it two times since. That’s how good it is. Although it can be quite cheesy, One Tree Hill and its relatable characters has taught me crucial lessons on life, love, and happiness. Haley and Nathan give girls across the world hope for #love. It also serves as my go-to escape in times of stress and troubles. I am passionate about the history and meaning behind this show, and I would probably be a different person without it.

Although fictional, these shows have taught me more about life than some of my classes in school (sorry mom and dad). In addition to great shows like these, Netflix holds a plethora of movies and documentaries to expand your knowledge and interests. So, sit back, relax, and spend your time wisely on Netflix.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
