Every day, we walk by the same trees and plants, see the same bodies of water, and breathe the same air. We often forget that in other parts of the country and world, there is constant deforestation, and air, land and water pollution, and people and animals dying because of it. The environment has been overlooked for far too long. It is all we have, and there are not unlimited amounts of water, clean air, and other resources.
Although recently, people have been starting to care and make more of an effort to make change. Take Paul and Stella McCartney’s “Meatless Monday” campaign, for example. The goal of Meatless Monday is for everyone stopped eating meat just once a week, which could make a tremendous difference in the environment. So many of our resources are put toward making room for livestock that is just going to be consumed. If we took half of the time, money, and energy put towards this and focused it on helping the people who are scarce on food, think of how much of a difference it would make.
Going vegetarian or vegan is one of the best things you could do for not only your own body, but the environment. I have been a vegetarian for a year and a half, and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I feel better physically, and also knowing that I am helping save not only animals lives, but also that I am doing something to make a positive impact to the environment. I realize that is not logical to think that being vegetarian will one day be more popular than eating meat, but just giving it up once a week makes a difference. The Meatless Monday campaign should be more widely adopted around the globe, because giving up one day of eating meat is nothing in comparison for how much the environment does for us. We only have one planet, and it is time that we start to treat it with more respect.
