"Music can move, music can change things, music can make things hurt less, music can make things make sense for moments a time - what's the point? I promise you, there's a point." - Tyler Joseph
Everyone has that one thing in their world that can get them through anything. Whether it be a specific person, a particular candy, or a movie -- doesn't matter what it is. Everyone has something that makes them feel okay again or that can patch up a hole that's about to overflow. You need that thing to stay sane. For me, that thing is music.
Ever since I can remember, music has been such a large part of my life. From idolizing Hilary Duff when I was little, to growing up and watching my father play guitar, to singing into my dingy karaoke machine - all these little things only catered to my passion for music early on, and it's only grown since then. So, it only makes sense to major in music when I go to college, right?
My first semester of college, I majored in music in Chicago. I was so excited to learn in a place where music thrived, but things changed. You never see change coming, but when it does, it helps you realize what you want in your life and what you need to properly thrive the way you're supposed to. Second semester, I decided to switch schools and change my major to something that is not music. A part of me feels like I'm cheating myself now that I am no longer studying my biggest passion. There's so much more to know about music that I don't. It's what I love most, so what else am I going to do?
Something that my first year of college has taught me so far is that you should always trust yourself and your gut. I trusted myself and made so many new changes this year, and the year isn't even over yet. My gut tells me I love music, so even though I am no longer studying it, somehow, I know I'm always going to make it a part of my life.
Find something that makes you feel like there are endless possibilities out there. Whenever I listen to a certain song whenever I'm feeling a certain way, it's a feeling that is very hard to describe. And the cool thing with music is that a song can sound different and mean something different to everyone. It's always up to your own brain on how a song can make you feel. But when I listen to words by my favorite artists, or whenever I sing or play - it's a unique feeling that cannot be beat.
It's important to have that one thing you know you can lean on. That one thing that always makes you feel better and makes you feel like there is more out there than what you have on your plate. To keep you inspired and driven, something that gives you purpose, and hold on to it. It'll make the big world seem a lot less scary.
