Why Meghan Loves Siena

Meghan is the most superb, croc loving, soccer mom who just so happens to be one of my hallmates, a fellow bonner, and one of my best friends here at Siena College. We tend to not leave each other's sides so it can be a wee bit confusing for all involved but we handle it pretty well as a dynamic duo. This week, we decided to find out more about what each Meg of Meg^2 loves most about our new home away from home.

1. Describe Siena in five words:

A crazy, loving, wonderful family.

2. What’s your favorite spot on campus?

I love to spend time at the Grotto, especially at night. It is such a beautiful spot to relax and reflect. It’s usually pretty quiet, too, so it’s the perfect place to go if you need to get away from the chaos of campus for a few minutes.

3. Favorite gelato flavor from Saga?

Salted caramel with graham cracker crumbs mixed in!

4. What extracurriculars are you involved in?

I’m a Bonner Service Leader, and I serve with the Unity House of Troy. I’m also a Pathfinder, a Girl Scout Leader, and a part of the Student Ministry Board.

5. Saga or Casey’s wraps?

Definitely Casey’s wraps; my go-to is grilled chicken, mozzarella, tomatoes, and black olives.

6. Favorite place to study?

I like to study in Casey’s. I need the background noise to focus, and there’s an 100% chance I’ll find friends to work with. I started the year off doing my schoolwork in my room, but it was wayyyyyy too easy to take a nap instead.

7. How do you stay organized/sane?

My planner is my best friend. Also, in the last few weeks, I’ve grown really attached to Google Calendar. It gives me reminders for my classes, service, meetings, and other obligations, which have saved me from accidentally skipping more than once now. My biggest pieces of advice for organization in college are to schedule your time and learn to say no, because it’s really easy to overcommit yourself.

8. Favorite memory so far?

My favorite memories so far have been Academic Support Hours for the Bonner program at the More House. Not too much work gets done, but I love spending time with my Bonner family, who are some of my favorite people on campus.

9. Favorite campus activity?

My favorite part of the week is Sunday night mass at 7pm. I love to see so many people come together to worship. The 7pm mass is musical and energetic; it’s an amazing way to recharge and start off the week.

10. Advice you would give to a current senior in high school?

My advice to a current high school senior would be to go with your gut. At the beginning of my senior year, I was sure that I wanted to move far away from my hometown; Siena is only fifteen minutes from my house. However, when I visited Siena, it was the first school where I got the feeling, and I immediately knew it was the place I wanted to spend my next four years. Pay attention to how you feel when you step onto a prospective campus. I couldn’t be happier at Siena and I’m so happy I trusted my instincts.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
