Fall In Love With Your Career and Not the Money

It's all about chasing your dreams and not the paycheck.

Fall In Love With Your Career and Not the Money
Career Tree

"Do what you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." The ideal job is one that you are passionate about because to you, it isn't really "work." As a business major in college, I was constantly told to pursue a career that made the most money. Careers that made the most money for a business major were ones where you are an accountant or a person who works in finance. I was never interested in being an accountant or a stockbroker or anything that involved numbers. I chose a path less traveled in my program and that was marketing.

For those who are not familiar with marketing, it may sound like a boring job just like accounting and finance. However, it is a field filled with creativity and strategic thinking and it was a field that I was passionate about. In my business program, marketing is known as the field that makes the least amount of money and one that was not always encouraged. Because I was interested in it, I aimed to work hard so that I could land a good job after graduation and prove that marketing is just as good, if not better than careers in finance and accounting.

However, chasing your passions isn't about proving someone wrong, it is about doing what you love. I know plenty of people who are out there pursuing dreams that may seem hard to reach or don't make the most money. Let's face it, the job market sucks and we are doing the best we can to survive, but it is important to keep pursuing your dream job and to not let others tell you what you should do. The people who aim for careers with the highest salary are not always going to end up the happiest.

If your passion is to teach children, then become the best teacher you can be. If you want to be a ballerina, then work hard and take dance classes. You only get one life to live and when your life is over, are you going to look back and regret all of the time you spent working at a job you hated or look back and be happy that you chased after your dreams and enjoyed doing what you love?

For those who are stuck and can't figure out what they want to do with their life or what they want to study in college, think about the things that you are the most interested in. There are so many ways that you can morph a niche into a career path that you will love. Only you can dictate your life. If you don't like what you are doing right now or what you are studying, then change it. Do not let money or negative influencers try to step in and tell you which career you should pursue. A wealth of happiness and knowledge beats monetary wealth any day.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
