I sat down in the leather seat. Row G seat 12. I was already smiling and the previews hadn't even started yet. The last time I was in a movie theater for Harry Potter was in 2011 for the midnight premiere of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two". I cried during that movie, and I knew I would cry during this one as well. Being the Potterhead I am I bought and read the actual "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" book. I was going to see the movie with my sister who was home from college for Thanksgiving break. We plan on getting matching Harry Potter tattoos when we're older, so you can probably guess how excited we were for this movie. The last preview finishes up and the lights dim. I internally screamed as the movie started playing. I'm not going to spoil anything, so don't worry, but this is why I loved the new "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" movie:
1. The subtle references to the Harry Potter series made me smile and excitedly slap my sisters arm. The movie takes place in New York City in the 1920's, but they made sure to mention Albus Dumbledore and other characters we've grown to love over the years.
2. The very slight mix of an ex-Hogwarts student into the magical world in America made for a very interesting combination. The different vocab and customs were a bit of an adjustment at first, but as the movie went on we got into the American flow.
3. There was just the right amount of comedy to balance with the darker aspects of the plot. I went from crying to laughing in a matter of seconds which, in my opinion, makes for a good movie. They managed to get me attached to a whole new group of characters (and creatures) in just over two hours, and I absolutely loved it.
4. One of the plot twists of the movie literally had me sitting in the theater with my hand over my mouth because I was so surprised. I knew this movie was going to be good, but I honestly think I experienced every emotion imaginable.
This movie was an amazing addition to the Harry Potter movie collection and I can't wait for the DVD to come out. It mixed humor with darkness and old characters with new ones. We came to love the American wizarding world as well as the people in it.
