There's so much hype about big schools to the point where it’s become a must to attend a big name institution that everyone in the nation has heard of. On the other hand, many people like myself find themselves at small schools and absolutely love them. Here’s three reasons why more people should consider small schools:
- You’ll actually know your teachers
At big state schools, you’ll be stuck in a fair amount of lecture halls with a couple hundred kids crammed into an auditorium, and you may never even introduce yourself to him or her. My class at Spring Hill is smaller than most of my high school classes with about 40 students in it. I actually know my teachers on a first name basis and chat with them whenever I see them around campus. They are also a huge part of the campus community as they participate in community service and other campus events with the students.
2. Everyone knows everyone
At a college with roughly 1,500 students, everyone is close with each other and are super friendly. This campus size is big enough to the point where you can know a majority of the students and still find new people to hang out with every day. You share classes with the same people you see in the dining hall everyday, at church, and at social gatherings. This builds a family-like atmosphere around campus where you can always find people you can rely on and trust as everyone looks out for each other.
3. Less Walking
My friends at big schools find themselves walking about eight miles a day just to get around to their classes. I mean sure, that's great for fitness and all but who really wants to have to leave for class half an hour early just to get there on time? I leave for my 9:25 biology class at 9:22. If that's not nice, then what is? Everything on campus is within about eight minutes of walking so you’ll never have to worry about a long commute to class or needing to bike anywhere.
