Why I Love My Double Chin

It's basically a scarf made of skin!

Why I Love My Double Chin
Isa Cournoyer

I've always been a little on the "plump" side of life. I started wearing bras in third grade as my body flourished into that of a woman. Yes, I was a woman in third grade. Ever since then, I've had this peculiar quirk about my face that I just couldn't seem to shake. Some people have freckles or moles. I, on the other hand, had a double chin.

It started out small, easy to hide in pictures if I stretched my neck far enough. You wouldn't notice it unless my mom had dressed me in a turtleneck that was a bit too tight. But over time, it grew, and so did my love and confidence in my double chin. She has been with me through everything, and I can't see my life any other way. You probably think I've gone mad at this point, but let me share with you seven quick reasons why I love my double chin.

1. It makes me loyal

That's right, I'm starting with a very sappy reason. Ever hear the saying, "I'd rather have a friend with two chins than two faces?" Well, it's true! My friends come to me because they know I'm always around to talk, give advice, or even cry with them. That's why my chin is so big, it's ~~full of secrets~~.

2. It's like having a third hand to hold stuff with

Only this one is made up of excess skin under your face, but still. Being able to carry your phone and wallet in your chin while also holding grocery bags and unlocking your apartment door is a lot less work than making two trips out to the car, amirite??

3. It (sometimes) protects me from spilling on my shirt

That little dribble when you take a drink of something and tip it too far back is unavoidable, but not for this girl! My D.C. makes the trip longer, making it just a tad bit easier for me to catch a spill before it happens. :D

4. It's like a scarf made of skin.

I feel as though my whole body is ten degrees warmer than the average person, my neck especially *wink wink*. This is great for those winter nights where it gets chillier than usual, but I fear not, for my chins keep me warm as they cuddle my neck.

5. Twice the chin = Twice the fun!

They say don't judge a book by its cover, but I don't know who 'they' are. So, we'll say that's false. I get along great with everyone! But put me in front of your parents, grandparents, even your crazy aunt Becky that likes to crochet her cat sweaters, and I will be an apple to their eye. I thank my double chin for that. People see me as warm and welcoming, like the Grandma that constantly bakes cookies.

6. It shows when I laugh...

And I mean this in the most positive way! Double chins show when you laugh wholeheartedly. And I laugh at everything, from jokes to funny dog videos, and I've built up my double chin because of my habits. Not eating junk food, not just laying around all day, but I've built my chin up because I'm always ready for my next laugh. ;)

7. I love my double chin because it doesn't mean I'm not healthy

I've played sports. I eat right. Now I'm not going to lie and say I've eaten right all my life, but I've been active all my life! I was born with a double chin, as we all were. Mine, however, has stayed quite a bit longer than others', and I have no intention of sending her off on her merry way anytime soon.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
