Most of us know that learning a second language is hard. As an English and European Studies double major, it is clear that I enjoy languages. However, I know that many do not enjoy taking language classes. For most, they say that it is too much work and that it takes too much time out of their already busy schedules. While both of these points are true, languages open a wide array of doors for people that they would otherwise not encounter.
Language allows us to communicate with one another. Therefore, learning multiple languages means that we are able to communicate with a wide array of people. This means that we're able to see concepts from different point of views. By doing this, we have a greater appreciation for and understanding of the world as a whole.
Anyone who loves literature should be overjoyed at the thought of having more literature available to them. By learning different languages, you have tons of literature available to you that you would otherwise not have. As an avid reader, this is an exciting prospect. By reading in various languages, you learn a wealth of vocabulary which you would otherwise not encounter. This vocabulary can help you recognize phrases and sentences that you would otherwise not understand, which can be helpful in various situations. By reading books written in a different language, you once again gain an important respect for other cultures that you may not have gained otherwise. It also allows for readers to understand cultures better. By reading a novel in a different language you are introduced to practices and sayings that other cultures use.
Most people love to travel. By learning multiple languages, traveling to different countries can be much easier for people. Even if you are not fluent in a language, just being able to pick up on certain phrases and being able to have simple conversations can make a vacation much less stressful. Instead of worrying about trying to find someone who speaks your own language, you have the freedom to ask almost anyone a question that you may have. This makes vacations much safer and more fun.
Yes, learning languages is hard and takes a lot of work. It is important to remember, however, that once you learn the language, it is something that will stick with you throughout your life. And plus, it's pretty cool to say things that none of your friends understand even if it doesn't always make sense.
