I think a huge part of why freshmen are excited to go to college is to experience dorm room life. No, I don't think it's because anyone is thrilled to share an 11 by 15 space but because it gives you the opportunity to bond with your ~super cool~ roomie and with those super hot guys down the hall. It's the first place that's yours and the first place in which your parents aren't constantly breathing down your back. You can decorate it any way you want and if you wanna slam that door you can most definitely slam it without hearing your full extended name being screamed by your mother. However, after freshman year rolls out and you get to move into your "brand new" spanking apartment, you realize just how terrible dorm life is.
1. You literally have your own bedroom again.
Remember all those awkward times when your roommate brought back her new lover and you just felt extremely awkward and didn't know what to do with yourself? Like "yeah guys I really think it's time for me to hit the library!!!"....at 2 A.M. Well while those times still occur you now have the safety of your bedroom to escape to. You want to watch your embarrassing TV show from middle school until the break of dawn? Just close that door and lay in bed all day with your stale Tostitos chips and your day old salsa. Why? Because no one can judge you anymore. Not to mention the fact that you no longer have to fit your pillows, blankets, Hokie bird pillow pet and oh yeah, yourself in a twin sized bed fit for you four year old cousin.
2. You can cook.
You no longer have the excuse to run to your late night dining hall (hey DX) claiming that you just desperately need those corn dogs because you're a growing girl and you need nutrition. You wanna make some tacos at 2 A.M.? Why not! You want to actually eat healthy and make an actual salad and maybe a yogurt at a normal hour of the evening? You can do that too! The world is your oyster and now you can eat whatever you want whenever you want.
3. You can do whatever. You. Want.
Invite 30 of your closest friends over for some Friday night activities? Sure! Your RA won't be breathing down your neck and your neighbor three doors down won't have a heart attack because apartments are so private and nobody actually cares! So much room for activities!
College is an exciting time. You meet your best friends, your bridesmaids and who knows some lucky ones even meet the loves of their life! While dorm life is an experience on its own, I would highly suggest anyone who is considering living in an apartment their second year to go with their gut and rent one. It will be the best decision you ever make.
