Why Kid President Should Be Your Life Coach

Two years later, and I can't get this little boy's outlook on life out of my head.

Why Kid President Should Be Your Life Coach

I know I’m not the only one that immensely enjoys coming across a “pick me up, feel good” type of video. You know, the ones where a puppy is playing with a baby, or a little girl is dancing her heart out, or even those BuzzFeed “Tasty” videos that make you feel like you’ve gained 10 pounds just watching the screen. Whatever the video might be, it makes you happy, and that single-handedly has an affect on the rest of your day. I’m no expert here, but I am a video enthusiast, and when I came across one particular video, I got that overwhelming sensation of happiness, and to no surprise it's stuck with me to this very day.

In January 2013, one of my favorite YouTube channels, SoulPancake, posted a video with the title, “A Pep Talk From Kid President To You.” My initial thoughts were, “Alright, who is Kid President? Have I see him in other videos? If he’s a kid, can he actually give me a solid pep talk? Let’s see what he’s got.” Once I clicked the video, Kid President appeared on the screen and gave it to the audience straight, saying, “I think we all need a pep talk.” Then the instrumental background music, the kind that hits you right in the feels, began playing. I knew a few tears would be shed in the near future.

Now, I don’t want to ruin this video for you, but warning, I might ruin this video for you. So if you haven’t watched it, I highly suggest clicking on the video before I let you know how it all goes down.

There are so many great things about this short video, I couldn’t choose just one, so here are five reasons why Kid President should be your life coach.

1. “Boring is easy. Everyone can be boring.”

Little man, you are so right. Why would I want to waste my life, sitting on my computer, while there’s a world out there for me to see? Of course, it’s a comforting feeling having your friends, phone, laptop, and a bag of cookies all in the same place, but that won’t give you any crazy stories to tell your future kids now, will it? No! So get up, get moving, and start making some adventures happen.

2. “I’m on your team, be on my team.”

How much cooler would the world be if we took the time to root each other on instead of tear each other down? We live in a world where it’s easier to judge and be close minded to certain things or even people, and there’s no one to blame for this except ourselves. We’ve created this “selfish world,” and it’s about time it ends. Not to bring up "High School Musical" or anything, but desperate times call for desperate measures. We’re all in this together, people! If everyone took a moment out of their day to accept others, and took a minute or two to listen to someone, or even think of a situation in a slightly different way, I guarantee we would all be on the same team.

3. “Get a better dream, then keep goin’, and goin’, and keep goin'.’”

More or less, we think dreams are simply just that: Dreams, unattainable goals that we can’t necessarily see our future selves conquering one day. But why is that? Why do we knock ourselves down before we even work up the courage to try? And listen, I’m not saying I wasn’t heartbroken when I found out my first dream of being the Tooth Fairy wasn’t going to come true, but luckily, I grew up, lost all my teeth, and realized the Tooth Fairy was cheap, so I got over that rather quickly. My new goals in life have a little more substance to them. In order to one day fulfill these dreams we're all constantly thinking about, it's important to know it won’t be easy. But with hard work, determination, a bit of failure, and some luck, you’ll be making those dreams a rewarding reality someday.

4. “We can cry about it or we can dance about it.”

This was one of my favorite lines of the whole video. Not everything is always going to go your way in life, and you know what? That’s OK. Sometimes your clothes are gonna shrink in the dryer; sometimes your ChapStick is going to melt if you leave it in the car on a hot summer day; sometimes you’re going to forget your curling iron is on and pick it up, resulting in a horror-movie scream; sometimes you won’t get the test grade you were hoping for after studying endlessly for weeks; sometimes you’re going to lose a friend you once thought had your back through it all; and sometimes, you just have to understand and accept that there isn’t anything you can do about it, but let it simply happen. We have no time for tears. So why not get your boogie on? I can’t recall a time I was ever sad while breaking out a dance move. I mean, I’m sure someone who was watching me felt a little sad, because their mind now has this image of me trying to dance horrendously, but hey, at least I was having a good time.

5. “We were made to be awesome.”

This line needs little to no explanation. We often forget how much we truly rock, but if you’re reading this, let me assure you, YOU ARE AWESOME! Because we’re human, we’re going to have days we feel down, and days we feel close to nothing. But it’s important to get out of those funks and remind yourself that there's a world out there yearning for all of your amazing qualities. Find what makes you happy and roll with it, because life is far too short to be anything but awesome.

After all was said and done, I found myself tearing up at this sweet 9-year-old boy's message. I’m such a sap, but I think his message got across to me, and hopefully to the almost 38 million viewers as well. Thank you, Kid President, for giving us the pep talk we all needed to hear. You said it like it is, so let’s get out there and make the world awesome!
