“What do you want to do with the rest of your life?” Us college students have heard it too many times. But it’s okay not to have an answer, and here’s why!
Too many people are pressuring you.
Sometimes, we get so overwhelmed when trying to figure out a major that we just pick one and get on with life. This is not the answer. You need to be completely sure of what you want before making any rash decisions. Make the decision for yourself and not for the people around you.
We just transitioned from high school life to college life.
Now, how can someone expect us to know our destiny, when three months ago we had to ask permission to leave the classroom? This is nowhere near an easy transition, why didn't anyone warn us about this?
Prerequisites.
It’s almost as if the common core was created for people who are still trying to figure out their majors. So if you’re stressing out, just get your core classes out of the way in your first two years of your undergrad.
Your advisors are on your side.
I personally had the best academic advisor. She helped me survive my freshman year and helped me figure out what I wanted to major in! Always remember that if your advisor isn’t the right fit for you, you can always request a new one. Having a supportive advisor makes such a difference in the decision process.
Time is on your side.
The more time you give yourself to explore different areas of study, the better chance you have of picking something you truly love. So please, don’t rush!
Finding something you care about.
Sometimes we don’t even realize that the hobbies or interests we have can turn into something bigger. Go with what your heart is telling you and follow your goals and dreams, regardless of how scary they may seem to you.
College is a learning experience.
Why else would we be going to college if we didn’t want to learn? College isn’t just about finding the answers to math equations; it’s also about finding yourself!
We all know how stressful college life can be. However, it doesn’t have to be as stressful as we make it. College is a time to find yourself and push yourself to be a better version of you. So before choosing a major, it’s really important to make sure it is what you truly want. Just remember to be patient and have faith in yourself! And always have fun!
