It’s a Friday night. You're laying in bed watching your 5th episode of "Grey's Anatomy" in a row with a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Your phone buzzes next to you. It’s your friend asking what time you’re coming over to go out. UGHHHHHH. As you lay in your pajamas with your unwashed hair tied up in a bun, no bra, you begin to think that maybe it’d be a good idea to stay in tonight.
We’ve all been there. Getting out of bed, showering, getting ready, and going out would just be too hard right now. You tell your friend that you're just going to stay in tonight and relax. "You're so lame," she responds. But in your elderly zen state, you smile to yourself because you know that staying in would be the best choice you've ever made.
Being a senior in college has made me a grandma. And I'm weirdly OK with it. I had my three years of partying, hangovers, lack of sleep, and a regrettably empty bank account. But why is it that as college students we feel the need to keep up with the crowd and go out just because it’s a weekend night and we feel guilty if we do not?
Here's some reasons why it's OK to stay in on Friday night:
1. You save money. (You're already broke enough.)
Worst feeling? Waking up and looking through our tear-filled eyes at our hacked-to-sh*t checking account. You didn't need that $25 round of shots, but you will need $25 (plus some more) for rent at the end of the month.
2. You don't have a hangover the next day and can be way more productive.
Don’t you want at least one Saturday morning where your head and body doesn't hurt so much that you can't move out of your bed? For every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction. So for every drink you have, you'll pay for it the next day. (Literally and figuratively) You may tell your friends that you have a lot of homework to do and need to stay in and finish it tonight (but you'll watch Netflix instead) BUT, you will be super productive tomorrow. Rather than being your usual lazy, smelly, hungover, whiny, Saturday-self, you will put on your big girl pants and get up, go grocery shopping, go to the gym, and start your homework.
3. You're busy binge-watching "Grey's Anatomy."
Is there anything better than laying in bed binge-watching Netflix? Your eyes have been glued to the TV screen for several hours, and you can hardly wait the fifteen seconds it takes to load the next episode.
4. You have time for your other interests.
Getting drunk and making small talk with friends and strangers in bars that music is so loud that your ears bleed doesn't count as a legitimate interest. When you're not going out all the time, you free up time in which you can learn to do other, more productive things. Making time for more productive, healthy things, like cooking, reading, working out, or yoga will make you feel infinitely better than shots and pizza at 2 a.m.
5. You avoid drama.
Ahhhh, the unavoidable girls' bathroom drama. I don't remember the last time I went to the bathroom at the bar and didn't see a girl sobbing while sucking down two vodka-waters. For one night you would rather not hear about how Abby hooked up with Chris even though Anna liked Chris and Abby knew that. Like OMG.
6. You save calories.
You have worked out all week and ate healthy all week. You are unfortunately aware that one beer is equal to a sandwich, and one shot is almost 100 calories. Taking a night off may not be the worst idea, and your body will thank you later. Do you really want to finish the night eating an entire pizza by yourself, or finishing off two chicken sandwiches on the curb outside of Kwik Star as your shoes lie somewhere off in the grass?
7. You need sleep.
You have spent your entire work week staying up late at night to write a 10-page paper and study for the four tests you had. Going to bed at midnight rather than 4 a.m. means you'll wake up feeling actually refreshed (and not hungover). And let's be real: sleep is way more fun than the majority of things that happen on a night out anyway. You need your beauty sleep. Is that too much to ask?
8. You get to relax.
The best part of not going out all the time is you get to just sit and relax. Your body needs time to recuperate, and sometimes a night on the couch is just what you need. You can allow yourself to feel perfectly happy in your sweats at home, reading, painting, watching TV, or just doing whatever it is you do that makes you feel comfortable and content.
