Currently, network television is being dominated by platforms like Netfilx, Amazon and Hulu. There are a couple of exceptions, like "American Horror Story" and "Grey's Anatomy." However, one of the most underrated shows on network television right now is the fan-favorite "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia." Even though it is on network television, it is one of the funniest and most under-appreciated shows currently on air. Created by Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney, "It's Always Sunny" is a perfect hybrid of dark humor and character development, and yet it has not won a single major award yet (unless you count the People's Choice Awards). Why this show so underrated, I couldn't tell you, but there are a number of reasons why it is just so great.
1. It's basically "Seinfeld" but on steroids.
Both shows are basically about nothing. However, in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," the characters are a thousand times worse than the characters in "Seinfeld."
2. The characters are all terrible people, but you love them anyway.
If you ever come across a group of people like The Gang, never hang out with them. They are literally the worst. But when watching "It's Always Sunny," you start to love them even though you are supposed to hate them.
3. The character development is fantastic.
Even though it doesn't look like it, each character subtly deteriorates throughout the show. There are several hints about each character's true intentions and background, and that just makes the show that much better.
4. The humor is the darkest on network television.
If you do not like black comedy, then this show is not for you. As the seasons go on, the humor just gets darker and funnier.
5. The cast is absolutely perfect.
Led by Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson and Danny Devito, the cast is absolutely perfect. Their acting is outstanding, and it is hard to believe that not a single one of the main actors has won an Emmy for their roles.
6. It's about to be one of the longest-running live action television shows in history.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "It's Always Sunny" is about to tie "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" as the longest-running television show in history. It is also expected to be renewed through 2019, breaking the record.
7. There's a whole episode about how the show hasn't won a single Emmy yet.
In "The Gang Tries Desperately To Win An Award," The Gang realizes that their bar has never been nominated for the Restaurant Bar Association’s Best Bar Award. So, in response, they try to copy other bars in order to win the award, but fail terribly. This episode is a clear jab at the Emmys, and it is fabulous.
8. "Dayman"
Even if you have never watched "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" before, you have probably already heard this glorious song. Sing it in bars, parties, etc. and there will definitely be someone else that knows the whole song. If you don't know what I'm talking about, listen to it right away. You won't regret it at all.
