Why It Is Okay To Be Second

Why It Is Okay To Be Second
Brooke Simpson

I am second, and that is okay.

In the twenty-first century we tend to be extremely self reliant and self centered. Everything is what we want when we want it, but I am second and that's okay. You see, as college students we are continually bogged down in assignments, exams, and activities, and consequently often times we let these things take the reigns of our lives. We constantly feel the need to be number one and be thought of in a certain way in order to keep our reputation from falling apart. But the truth is, when we allow ourselves to be number one, we are blatantly disobeying the one who is the reason we are here.

I am second, and that is okay.

Whatever we do is not us, and that is sometimes a hard pill to swallow because we have selfish pride, but it is the honest truth. I am blessed with the love of writing, but that is not something that I developed on my own, it was a talent that in the beginning God decided to instill in me to hopefully bring glory to Him one day. This is the purpose of our abilities, to give God the glory and honor He deserves, because after all, He created all things including our talents. Being second doesn't mean that we are weak or incapable of doing something, it simply means we have enough respect to realize how impossible it is to complete anything without the hand of the Almighty God.

I am second, and that is okay.

As a college student, school often times takes over my life because the assignments pile up out of nowhere, leaving me with ample amounts of stress. There are Sunday nights and Wednesday nights were it would honestly be more productive and more efficient to stay on campus instead of going to church because we all have assignments on top of assignments. But because I am second, with my car keys in hand, I go. Because when we are second, our top priority is not us or what we could be doing. When we are second our intention is to do everything we can to be all we can be.When we are second our only focus is on the one who is number one.

I am second, and that is okay.

John 3:30 states, “He must become greater; I must become less.” As Christians, we are called upon to be Christ like, to be imitators of him, and to do all things with Christ in mind. However, the only way to accomplish this is to become less and to swallow our selfish pride. We must acknowledge that He is greater than we can ever become and that second is better because He has all Wisdom and knowledge. On earth, our purpose isn't to win the big game or to have a 4.0 GPA, it is to be like Christ, and by doing so, draw people closer and closer to Him. “He must become greater; I must become less.”

I am second, and that is okay. In our world it is often taught that second is a sign of weakness or a lack of effort, but being second makes us focus on what's ahead. Because of what lies ahead of me, I am okay with being second, are you?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
