Everyone worships something.
When I hear someone say the word "worship," I immediately associate it with singing or playing music in church. But the reality is, we all worship something every day of our lives. Everyone is passionate about something. Even the most cynical or strange person you might know, lives and breathes to do something that gives meaning to their lives, and makes them, or something or someone they care about, feel important.
They might not say they do it for that reason, but it's the reality. We were all made to worship.
The question is, "What do you worship?"
So often in our lives, we can easily become distracted by material things in this world. But do those things really satisfy you? Is having more of what you currently have, which is not satisfying now, going to ultimately satisfy you in the future?
I know in my life, there are plenty of things that I couldn't wait to have and thought, "Man, if I had that, my life would be awesome." Then I actually obtain it, but then over time, I'm ready to obtain something else. It seems that in life, I go through this pattern of always wanting more, but my heart is never satisfied. I will admit I try to ignore this feeling, but no matter what I do, I am left with the honest realization that it doesn't satisfy me.
Have you ever played a video game that you eventually got bored of, and then you go onto the next one, and then the next and the next? Or maybe you have experienced this in relationships, where you just go to the next person and you think, "This person will be the one!" But you end up breaking up because they didn't live up to your expectations. Maybe you really like money, and so you think, "If I were to make this much, that would be perfect." But then you want more and more. You feel like you're just constantly in this cycle of never being satisfied.
Ever wonder why this is? Well, here's the answer: We were all made to worship, but because of sin, the reality is we're worshiping the wrong things. We're worshiping things that, in the moment, appear to satisfy our hearts, but they don't match up to our expectations.
What happens after we realize this is a lot of us simply settle, and we think, "This is all there is, and nothing's going to get any better." I know in my life, this is where depression has crept in. But I don't recognize the issue of my depression is from me worshiping these material things.
So what do I do? I go and try to dig deeper, and I'm foolish enough to think, "Well, maybe I can cure this feeling by indulging myself in more of this stuff," when in reality, "that stuff" is what got me into this place of hopelessness in the first place!
I'm sure you can relate to this pattern of thinking. Or maybe you're like me sometimes, and you don't want to even consider that what I said was true, because you don't want accept how foolish you are.
So there's the reality of our hearts. Pretty messed up, right? So what's the solution?
If we first recognize that everyone ends up worshiping something in their life, but often, the things we worship end up not satisfying that hole in our heart, then there has to be something that can, right? What is it that will satisfy me?
A couple years ago, the quarterback for the New England Patriots, Tom Brady, was interviewed on CBS' weekly news program, "60 Minutes."
If you don't know who Tom Brady is, honestly, what planet do you live on? However, let's consider the possessions and the status of Tom Brady. Top of his profession, makes a lot of money, married to a supermodel and has great kids. He's the prime example of someone living the American Dream.
Yet, during the interview, Tom said something very interesting. He said, "Why do I have three Super Bowl rings and still think there's something greater out there for me? I think, God, there's got to be more than this..."
The interviewer responds, "What's the answer?"
Tom answers, "I wish I knew, I wish I knew..."
The answer is simple, though, and Tom actually said it. "God." God created and designed us. This is why the movement behind our world thinking, "There is no God," is so dangerous. We've abandoned the actual reality that there is a God, and guess what? God satisfies us.
Why? Because God designed us to be satisfied by Him!
There's a hole in our hearts, and the shape of the hole can only be filled by God. If we try to fill that hole with other things, it's like trying to put a square shape into a circle-shaped hole. It won't work.
Therefore, I leave you with this.
In life, consider the things that you enjoy. I'm glad you enjoy them, but are those material things anywhere close to God? Remember, God created the things you enjoy, and yes, He called them good in Genesis 1 and 2, but be careful of not getting so caught up in the creation that you forget about the creator.
When a parent puts up a picture on their fridge that their child drew in art class, the parents don't ignore the kid and start spending more time with the picture than the kid, right? In the same way, we need to be on guard and realize that the most joy we will experience in life comes from worshiping God and the creator of the things we enjoy, not the things themselves.
God has allowed us to enjoy His creation, but we must always be on guard to not lose focus of Him and start worshiping the material things in this life. But the Good News is that even when we do, Jesus Christ has saved us from the penalty of our idolatry. Therefore, everyone who believes in this amazing truth now has the Holy Spirit, the same power that allowed Jesus to rise from the grave, working in their hearts, molding and shaping them into a better creation, and getting them back to God's original design for humanity.
