Summer, summer... summer! With summer just around the corner, I wanted to share a little of my enthusiasm with other people. So without further ado, here are five reasons why I’m excited for summer.
1. Family
Family is possibly one of the things you miss the most when you go off to college, especially if the distance is very long. That’s certainly true in my case. I miss my mom, dad, and brothers so much. For the first time, my brother and I spent our birthday separated by over 2,000 miles. This new experience led me to realize that what keeps me going is the fact that everyday I’m one day closer to seeing them. Once I’m back in Texas, I will enjoy them for three months before I come back to Philly in August. (Not going to lie, but they promised cake when I come back for my birthday, so they better keep their promise.)
2. Friends
Apart from seeing your family, going back home for summer also lets you reunite with your dear old pals and chums. You get the amazing opportunity to catch up on all of things that are going on in their lives. It’s always nice to hear how they found a new interest, or they tried a new thing. They are some of the people that know you the best, and so a conversation with them is just endless and organic. They can make a not-so-fun summer into a memorable one.
3. Self-exploration
Summer is the perfect time to do some soul-searching, as cheesy and as absurd that may sound. It’s the time to really reflect on the year thus far and change directions if things are not going as planned. This is what I want to dedicate a portion of my summer to because I know that I’m not in a one-way fixed street to a certain future. I have the ability to pave other streets and find other directions I may want to take. While doing some self-exploration, I might find something that really interests me or that I want to further develop. Summer is just the perfect time for self-development, which leads me to the next reason why I’m excited for summer.
4. Endless time
Take this from personal experience; three months go by really slowly if there is nothing to do. Although time is not really endless during the summer, it definitely feels like an eternity when you are spending all of your time being a hermit. Finding something to do is just as important as actually doing it, so find something you actively want to pursue. I, for instance, have realized how much I want to improve my writing skills. For me, it’s just as easy as buying a book full of prompts that grasp my attention and stimulate my creativity. I also want to continue pursuing singing/acting. I could probably take some vocal lessons or maybe join a community theatre company during the summer. Anything that gets me out my bed and into the world is good.
5. Break!
Summer is just a big marker of how you managed to survive a full year of pure torture. It’s a sudden hiatus from all the stress of the school year. It’s the great break you need and deserve, so enjoy it!
