Sex sells. That's why it is all over the media, all the time. The thing is, it's still considered a taboo. Everyone does it, a lot of people like it, but if you were to bring it up in a casual conversation, chances are it would not go over well.
Think about it this way, when someone's son is going through puberty, the father more often than not is the one giving "the talk". From what I've seen in movies and on TV, and from what I've heard from my friends, usually, the dad encourages the son to get laid and tells him how great it is. Chances are, he wouldn't be telling his daughter the same thing. But why? Why are we all not taught to enjoy sex?
Advertisements are another example of this double standard. Beautiful women are always used to sell things; cars, food, clothes, cologne, etc. Nine times out of ten, they're doing something to seem seductive, suggesting that if a man buys that particular product, he will attract a beautiful woman. Why do ads not do the same for women? If anything, ad's for women are catered to body image, and usually involve a beautiful woman as well, suggesting if you buy this product, you will come across as the beautiful woman in the ad.
Now, I have plenty of opinions on the way we advertise things in our society, but that is a rant for another time. My point here is, why is sex treated differently between the two sexes? Why do we still accept the idea that sex is more for a man than it is for a woman? Women are desired by men, that's why they are used in these ads. However, it suggests that we are objects, and with that, it makes it hard for women to be comfortable in being sexual beings themselves.
Sex is so taboo, that people would rather hear male rappers make music sexualizing women, than female rappers sexualizing themselves. Rappers like Drake and A$AP Rocky can post pictures of their abs and Calvin's no problem, but if Cardi B gets online to tell Offset what she wants to do to him later, the internet loses its mind and starts calling her names.
If accepting the fact that women also like having sex is such a problem, imagine what kind of issue it is for those who belong to the LGBTQ+ community. They're either seen as objects and perverts by those who are so closed minded, and that is a dangerous game to play.
We need to do better by everyone in our society, let people live and explore their sexualities. As long as no harm is being done, it is no one's business how people choose to express themselves. Go out, get consent, use protection and effective communication and enjoy yourselves.
