J.K. Rowling announced on Oct. 23 that the upcoming play, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is going to serve as the eighth Potter story. The play is written by Jack Thorne, in collaboration with Rowling, and directed by Olivier and John Tiffany. The new story, which will appear in two parts, will come to the Palace Theatre London in July 2016.
I have been a fan of Harry Potter since I was in sixth grade when my mom suggested it, much to my chagrin that I picked up the first book. Despite seven years having passed since I first picked up the books and four years having passed since the final movie was released, I still consider myself a devoted “Potterhead.” However, when I learned about the new play, my enthusiasm was not where it likely would have been all those years ago.
I have seen online that many fans of the books are relieved that we will find out at long last what happened to The Golden Trio – for those who are unfamiliar with the term, the trio refers to Harry and his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Many believe that the final scene on Platform Nine and Three Quarters where Harry waves goodbye to his second son who is heading to Hogwarts is an insufficient conclusion, but I do not think that a play will serve as a better ending for the Potter legacy.
I am generally the type of person that once something finishes I believe that it should stay finished. I am not a fan of sequels for that reason because seldom times follow-ups are any better or close to living up to the original material. However, since Rowling clearly feels that Potter’s story is not over, I believe that she should have continued the story in the form of a book. Instead of a performance in London that only a limited amount of fans will be able to see, a new book would have allowed fans from all over the world to re-experience the magic.
Personally, I enjoyed the epilogue of Harry Potter. Questionable name choices for Harry’s children aside (seriously? Albus Severus Potter?), the ending tied up loose ends and if Rowling really wants to entice fans, I think that it is high time for her to write a prequel about Harry’s parents and the First Wizarding War against Lord Voldemort. Who’s with me?
