It all began in the summer of 2010. I was eager to start high school and excited to see what the next four years would be like. I remember watching the first episode of "Pretty Little Liars" ("PLL") and my mother came in and told me "not to watch a show about liars." What a bad representation of high school to a thirteen-year old, right? No. Well….maybe yes. I didn’t care! I was addicted from episode one. It may seem like a trashy teenage girl show, and it has its moments, trust me, but it’s so much more.
The main villain, called "A," wreaked havoc on the show each week by blackmailing the main characters. Every girl in high school watched "Pretty Little Liars."The locker room talks before gym class always consisted of “Did you see what ‘A’ did to those girls?!” I grew up talking to the girls at lunch and bonding over the ridiculous show plots.
My senior year of high school, I found myself without my usual lunch table due to different classes. I sat with some new girls and immediately we talked about the shows we all watched, and of course…we all loved "PLL." We had "PLL" parties, made themed cookies, and even had a pizza with “PLL” written in pepperonis. No regrets, right? I also remember some very serious conversations with my dad about not interrupting us when we watched our show.
I needed to know who ‘A’ was. The show has so many plots I could not even say what the main issue was in every season because it all blends together. All I knew was that I would watch the show until I knew the answer to every last secret.
My best friend and I watched the show in the summer every Tuesday night together before leaving for freshmen year of college. Every week we had a new flavor of ice cream and plenty of screams over the terrifying (not really but at the time) events in the show.
My first night away from home in college was a Tuesday night, which meant "PLL." I sat in my empty dorm room watching my favorite most addicting show while face timing my best friend back home during commercials.
The next day, I went to practice and found a teammate talking about the show she watched last night: guess what it was? We eventually started watching "PLL" every Tuesday night and became best friends over a TV even when life gets crazy, Tuesday nights at 8 will always be "Pretty Little Liars" time.
So maybe "PLL" is not addicting in the way of a great plot or the best actors in the world. However, it is possibly one of the best series I have watched that showed what true friendship is. The girls on the show constantly fight for each other and prove what it means to be a good friend. I may not know exactly what is happening on the show, but I do know who I will be dissecting the episode with. Even when life gets crazy, Tuesday nights at 8 will always be reserved for "Pretty Little Liars." I will proudly say I am still in college and addicted to a show about liars.
