From a young age, girls start picturing the man they are going to marry. They may dream of a super hero or a prince from a far away land. They may want him to be sweet and make them laugh. Ultimately, they want a man who will be with them forever.
For a girl who's never had a serious relationship, commitment is scary. You feel as though you're giving up part of your independence in place of being dependent on another human being. But it doesn't have to be that way.
My grandparents prove that. Each of them is very independent, but they also depend on each other. My grandmother has a lot of health issues and my grandfather sticks by her side. He catches her when she falls (quite literally.)
That's why I want to marry a man like my grandfather.
From a young age he was a major figure. From watching movies with me to sitting me on his shoulders at Disney World. My family says he cried when I was born, but he says he had something in his eye.
He loves me unconditionally, just like my future husband should. He supports me in everything I do, just like my future husband should. He tells me when I'm wrong, just like my future husband should.
Don't settle for the close by or good-for-right-now guy. Everyone should be loved the way they deserve. Look for a man who will be by your side, but also step away. The one who agrees with you, but isn't afraid to disagree. The one who knows you can handle yourself, but is always there for backup.
My grandparents have been married for 56 years. That's what I want. I don't want to be on husband number three or four. I want someone who will love me/put up with me for as long as we live.
Pessimists say fairytales don't exist, but I choose to believe they do. Everyone deserves love, I just hope I fall in love with a man who has the same character as my poppa.
