As soon as I was out of the womb I basically knew who Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were. The twins who played Michelle from "Full House" and were never in a movie without the other one. I loved them, and to this day—even if they decided not to be on "Fuller House"—I still love them. I can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t care about the Olsen twins, and that’s because every time I would go over to my cousin’s house we would have a Mary-Kate and Ashley marathon.
I’m going to the Bahamas at the end of the summer, and, for some reason, that trip has been making me think a lot about Mary-Kate and Ashley. Especially Holiday in the Sun, by far one of the best Olsen twins movies. But Mary-Kate and Ashley were an essential part of my life, teaching me all about exploring the world and learning new things, and looking very cute and fashionable while doing so.
Holiday in the Sun is probably my favorite Olsen movie. Even though they wanted to go to Hawaii with their friends, Mary-Kate and Ashley are forced to go on a trip to the Bahamas with their family (how rude of their parents, I know). While there, they obviously meet cute boys and have to deal with Megan Fox trying to steal their men, but they also solve a case involving smuggling. That’s what I love about Mary-Kate and Ashley movies most, I think. Even though they are most of the time evidently about teens falling in love and stuff, they always have some weird subplot that has to do with somehow saving the day. Holiday in the Sun is also probably the most quotable Mary-Kate and Ashley movie, and that’s mainly because of Megan Fox. Her character is supposed to be the snob, and if you don’t know how to reject an unwanted admirer, Megan Fox can definitely teach you.
Boy: “Hi.”
Megan Fox: “Bye.”
Other Boy: “Hey, what’s up?”
Megan Fox: “Not my temperature.”
"Our Lips Are Sealed" is another great Mary-Kate and Ashley movie, about the Olsen’s being forced into the Witness Protection Program. This movie is also one of the funniest ones, due to the montages of chase scenes—most notably the one set to “99 Red Balloons” in an amusement park—and the fact that the movie is set in Australia. The Olsen family also keeps a pet kangaroo in this movie, and I think that alone says a lot about Mary-Kate and Ashley in general.
"Winning London" is also a personal favorite, because the two guys in this movie are very attractive and one of them is British. It’s also just a great movie, though. Mary-Kate and Ashley take part in the Mock UK (or something like that) in London and have to deal with all of that and all the boys they meet.
"New York Minute" is also another good one, and the Mary-Kate and Ashley movie that emphasizes the twin’s differences the most. In most Olsen movies, Mary-Kate is the cool, kind of emo one and Ashley is the smart goody-two-shoes. This movie showcases that especially, because throughout the film Ashley is trying to give this big important speech, and Mary-Kate is trying to get to a Simple Plan concert. In watching this one recently, I realized that Bob Saget makes a cameo appearance, and that just made me love the whole thing even more.
So, if you think that Mary-Kate and Ashley movies are bad and stupid, you are wrong. They are the best things that have ever happened to me, and I would not be the person I am today without them. They are all so funny and so great, and if you haven’t watched them before you are seriously missing out. All of those movies taught me how to be a real girl, and maybe that’s why I’m a little weird, but that doesn’t matter.
So, thank you, Mary-Kate and Ashley, for making it possible to travel the world and go on cool adventures all while sitting on my couch. Plus, I can assure you that every single one of their movies has a makeover montage, and that alone is reason enough to go and watch them.
