Why Iconic Teen Movies Are For More Than Teens

Was John Hughes actually Buddha? Can Alicia Silverstone show us the light?

In between the iconic lines and the great soundtracks, these movies have a little about life to teach us, too!

1. "Can't Hardly Wait"

There is no time like the present to say what you need to say! "Fate. There is such a thing as fate, but it only takes you so far. Then it is up to you to make it happen.”

2. "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off"

We shouldn’t take things too seriously. Life is short, and while we have to make time for work and school, it's equally important to remember to make the most of the time we have.

3. "Mean Girls"

If you’re going to be friends with someone, you can’t talk crap about them and secretly plot their demise. That's not being a friend. Treat people well!

4. "The Breakfast Club"

We’re all dealing with our own struggles in our own way. Don’t judge people before you get to know them.

Dear Mr. Vernon,

We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it is we did wrong, but we think you’re crazy for making us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us, in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Does that answer your question?

Sincerely yours,
The Breakfast Club

5. "The Princess Diaries"

Don't forget who your real friends are. They're going to be the ones standing next to you no matter what anyone else thinks, and they're going to be the ones standing next to you when you find out that you're royalty.

6. "A Cinderella Story"

You have to be true to yourself! You can't live your life according to what someone else wants or thinks you should do.

7. "Clueless"

You’re going to make mistakes, and that’s OK! We can always get up tomorrow and start all over again.

8. "10 Things I Hate About You"

Don’t try to change people. It's not your place. You may end up pleasantly surprised if you just let people be themselves. Admittedly, this plot is based off of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," but that version doesn't have Heath Ledger serenading Julia Stiles on the bleachers during soccer practice.

9. "Easy A"

Don't believe everything you hear. Rumors are often false and only end up hurting people.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
