I remember the exact day I heard about Facebook. I was in eighth grade and I was totally confused as to why people would make a Facebook account when they already had a MySpace account. Of course, these were the days before people had six different social media accounts. At first, I was too stubborn to make the switch. Eventually, I followed all of my MySpace friends over to the other side. Facebook took a while to get used to, but eventually, I learned to love it and now I can’t imagine my life without it. But sometimes I still wonder what it would be like to leave a comment on my BFF’s page.
So here they are, the top five reasons I miss Myspace.
1. Profile song. On Myspace, you got to pick a profile song. The typical middle school girl would pick her song with lyrics that perfectly described her devastating teenage life at the moment. It was the easiest way to send a message. Find a song and band that nobody has ever heard of and you were good to go.
2. Default Pictures. Finding the perfect default was a long and hard process. Hopefully somebody would comment, “Default it girl” on one of your pictures to help out. You knew you found the right default when you started getting comments (not likes) on it. Even if it was only the result of a pc4pc.
3. Layouts. One of my favorite things about MySpace was accessorizing my profile with the latest layout. I honestly probably changed my layout two times a week. At first it was from layout codes found online until I got scary good at writing up my own.
4. Top 8. MySpace’s Top 8 was the best and worst thing to happen to a 7th grade girl. Being removed out of your friend’s Top 8 was a slap to the face but making it into your crush’s Top 8 was the best feeling in the world. I spent hours overanalyzing my Top 8.
5. Tom. You got to be friends with MySpace’s creator. Okay, sure, he became your friend the second you created an account, but still. He seemed like a pretty chill dude even if he never changed his default.
