Waking up Saturday morning after a long night of exploring Greek row is usually a struggle for most. After you finally pull yourself out of your porch bed, you’ll wander down to the kitchen around lunchtime in hopes of finding a tall glass of water and something good that's ready to eat. Although you’re not feeling too hot, you know nobody there will judge you … including the boys currently in the house — yes, boys.
Having cool house boys has been one of the best things about living in my chapter house. In case you don't know what house boys are, they are typically fraternity men hired by your house director (mom) as kitchen staff.
In addition to that, once you get to know them, they pretty much become part of your sorority family. Here are a few reasons why these guys are actually some of the best men you’ll meet in college:
1. They always seem happy to see you.
… and you’re always happy to see them! Whether or not you saw them at lunch three hours ago, the mutual excitement to see each other never dwindles.
2. They won’t let you go hungry.
Shout out to house boy Evan. When I told him I was on a “hunger strike” (which didn’t last long — I was just grumpy after my nap and didn’t want chicken), he found me tacos so I didn't have to starve for a few hours.
3. They keep you sane.
If you’re used to having brothers or just hanging out with guys in general, this can be a nice middle ground in a house full of 70 women. You can always trust house mom to hire cute ones, too!
4. You always have a guy that will make food for you.
That’s the dream, right?
5. Even when they give you hardly any food on your late plate, you still love them.
Half the time, it’s because there wasn’t enough leftover food. The other half it's that they’re definitely messing with you.
6. They won’t judge you for the absurd things they overhear.
Trust me, they know everything. If you think I’m exaggerating, I’m not. But hey — at least they don’t admit it and still like you anyways!
7. In turn, you don’t judge them for their absurd antics.
Every house boy has their own quirks. Ours, in particular, love to dance while they work. They’re not the best dancers or singers, but they’re certainly the most entertaining.
8. If you need an emergency date dash/formal date …
They’re more than happy to go. Or if you hint to them that you even have an event coming up, they’ll badger you to find them a date. Which, of course, you will.
9. They love their job.
Even if they don’t admit it, being a house boy is something they actually like. Some of them even own a piece of your chapter’s letters!
10. Even though house boys come and go, they always have a special place in your sorority.
You’ll miss them when they’re gone — even if you don’t think you will.
