Why Hitting Rock Bottom Isn't So Bad

To quote my favorite movie Bridesmaids, "I'm telling you, hitting rock bottom is a good thing, because there's nowhere to go but up." I think this lesson is extremely important in life because without challenges we would never learn how to overcome them. Trust me, I know hitting rock bottom is one of the worst feelings in the world. You feel dejected, empty, alone, and like a failure. But rock bottom is simply a road block on your way to happiness.

1. You learn who your true friends are.

Acquaintances are there for you during your ups, but only genuine friends will stick by your side at your worst. Asking for help is difficult, but those closest to you will always be willing to give you a helping hand in your times of need. As for the people who distance themselves from you when you are struggling, they aren't your true friends, and you should eliminate them!

2. You gain perspective.

Things might get bad, and they can get really, really bad. You may cry and scream and wonder why this is all happening to you. You will feel like it is the end of the world and you will never be happy ever again. It'll seem like you are in the midst of a never ending rain storm, one that soaks you down to your core. But then all of the sudden the clouds will disappear and the rain will cease, and the sun will shine brighter than you've ever seen it before. Things will look up again and you will gain a whole new perspective on your life. Without the storm, you would never realize how beautiful the sun is.

3. You will become stronger.

It takes a lot of strength and willpower to pull yourself out of a deep rut. Even though it will take a lot of effort, once you've swam up from rock bottom you will be stronger than you ever were before. It's not easy. It will be a long uphill battle, but the outcome is worth it.

4. You can now help others.

Even though you went through hell, now you've gained insight that you can share with other people. Use your past troubles in order to help your friends and family through their tough times. What is life without giving back? Experiencing rock bottom makes you wiser, and you can give your advice to those who need it.

5. You learn everything will be okay.

So you lost yourself for a while, so you cried, so you felt lost, you're still alive. You'll realize things will get shitty, but no matter what you'll make it out. In the middle of the chaos you will think nothing will be the same ever again, but when it's all over you can say that you're going to be OK. As the age old saying goes, "everything will be okay in the end, and if it's not OK, it's not the end."

So next time you feel like you've hit rock bottom, just remember that it's not as bad as you think. All of these lessons and more can come out of the toughest moments in life. When you're feeling as though there's no hope, just remember, things can only go up from here.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
