Why High School Is A Waste of Time

I still never learned how to adult.

Don't get me wrong, my four years of high school were some of the best of my life. I made friendships that I know will last my whole life, I had a very busy social calendar, and I made so many memories. But apart from the social aspect, high school is a huge waste of time.

This may seem a little dramatic -- I admit, it is. But there are so many things that I wish I had the opportunity to learn in high school that I did not. Students spend more time memorizing the periodic table and cramming for standardized tests than they do anything else. They lose sleep because they are up at night trying to remember that Y=MX+B for a quiz, or trying to interpret a Shakespeare play. I understand that it is crucial for high schoolers to broaden their knowledge and take basic classes such as English and math. However, there is a lack of focus on teaching essential things that we will need to know beyond our high school years.

If only high school was like college, where you actually have freedom and can make your own decisions. If you could take the classes you wanted, classes that actually interested you. In high school, you should be able to take career-based classes. That way, you wouldn't have to sit through classes that bore you and that you know you will never need (for me, that was pre-calculus, chemistry, and biology, just to name a few). Also, taking career-based classes might help more students be able to figure out what they want to study in college earlier in life. This would result in less major switches in college, fewer undeclared majors, and less overall stress for students.

You should be able to take classes that teach you how to be a functioning adult. For example, I left high school without learning so many things that I will need as an adult. It will be forever ingrained into my memory that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, but I have no idea how to balance my checkbook. I could recite the entire quadratic formula to you, but I know nothing about investing in a 401k.

High school is a constant, four-year cycle of cramming as much information into your head as you can, regurgitating it for a paper or exam, and forgetting it as soon as you submit it. What a waste!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
