A question that we never really ask ourselves is, "why are we here?" I think on the surface we ignore the question by telling ourselves we're here because it was God's plan, it happened by chance, or the classic: because my mom dragged me here. I think the question begs more attention if we are to achieve our ultimate goals, so why are we here?
I will start this off by telling you why I am here. I am here because this is where God wants me right now. I know I just complained about using it as a way to escape the question, but let me further explain why I believe it and how I arrived here in Troy.
I was born in Texas in 1993, to Terry and Melinda Smith. I am the first born son, third born child. My dad was in Texas for seminary when he met my mom. In 2001, he was called to pastor a small church in Darlington, Florida. This is where I called home for 10 years, until an unfortunate event moved us to Alabama. It was this event that confirmed why I believe God wants me here. When we had to move, I became very angry and upset about everything that was happening. I was angry at the people causing the trouble, and I was angry at myself for being helpless. Looking back, I realize God was working in all of it. If we had not moved, I may have never ended up at Lurleen B. Wallace or even Troy University if it wasn't for His plan at work.
Ok, so you may be saying, "this still doesn't explain anything". I promise I am getting there. Realizing God was working in all of this meant there was a reason I was here. In Esther 4:14, Mordecai tells Esther that perhaps she was put there for such a time as that. I believe that is true for all of us. We may not be here like Esther, for everything she went through, but we are here for something nonetheless. I believe I am here to bring a little joy into life. I love to laugh, but more than that I love to make other people laugh.
Now you are probably asking, "are you a comedian?" The answer is no. I don't need to be a comedian to bring laughter. Besides that, the humor that most comedians in today's society want is people laughing at their crude and dirty jokes. I don't simply want laughter, I want to radiate so much joy that it points back to the ultimate source of that joy - Jesus Christ. Whatever may happen to me, I pray that Christ's love and joy is always evident and that we may always find our joy and peace in Him.
So that is why I am here. I believe that I am here to spread the joy of Christ to my fellow brethren. We all have purpose. One must merely stop and listen to what God has to say to them.
