Why Having Thick and Curly Hair is Hard

It's like a never ending battle

Why Having Thick and Curly Hair is Hard

My whole life I have had really thick and curly hair. Actually should I say frizzy some days and curly the next. I remember hating getting my hair done by my mom because my hair was a monster to calm down. Most days I would end up just wearing it down. Here are some things that come with thick hair.

1. You can't just wake up and your hair be perfect

I can probably name on one hand how many times I've been able to wake up, roll out of bed, brush my hair and go on with my day. Nope that never happens.

2. You can't brush your hair.

When you have curly hair you learn very quickly not to brush your hair unless you are going for frizzy Afro look. When you do try to brush your hair you end up ripping half of it out because it's so knotty.

3. When it's humid it's your worst nightmare.

When you walk outside on a humid day your hair just turns into the bush that is planted in front of your house.

4. Swimming is a nightmare!

Going swimming is fun, I love it. The problem is the part after you swim. My hair somehow ends up in one giant not that is so hard to get out. It's even worse when you go in the ocean.

5. Knots!

I've given up on them in general. The only way to get them out is to put a lot of conditioner. I truly don't understand people who don't use conditioner. I have to keep a brush in my shower so I can brush my hair while there is conditioner in it so I don't rip fifty percent of it out.

6. Putting your hair "up"

I don't understand how girls can just throw their hair up in a pony tail or a bun. It takes me forever to get it into a hair tie.

7. Hair ties!

If I had a dollar for every hair tie I've broken, I would have my college paid for! Also, Bobby pins end up being stretched out to the point were you can't use them.

8. It takes so long to straighten.

It takes me so long to straighten my hair that my arm hurts so bad and then goes numb. I have to set aside a whole day just to straighten my hair. Therefore I only do it on special occasions.

9. The hair does what the hair wants!

It doesn't matter how much product you put in it, it has mood and you just have to pray that it's in a good mood today.

Over all there are a lot of struggles to having thick and curly hair, but there are also a lot of advantages. I wouldn't give up my hair for anything. It's a curse but also a blessing. My mom always tells me that I have beautiful hair and I would get angry with her because I wanted to straighten it, but now I realize that this is my hair and it's here to stay so I better get used to it.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
