I have experienced Valentine’s Day as someone single and as someone in a relationship. Either way, I am still not a fan. Of course, having a boyfriend makes it a little more tolerable, and my boyfriend and I are celebrating it. However, I still do not like the idea behind it.
It’s fake, y’all. It is not a real holiday. Yes, I know about Saint Valentine of Rome and how he is associated with a courtly of love. Yet, I still don’t like the holiday… I do not like overly priced chocolate. A lot of the times expensive dinners are kind of gross. I do not really see the difference in $10 flowers from Kroger or $100 from an expensive florist. They just die on my desk anyways… Keep your extra $90.
If you’re in a relationship, society acts like you need to go all out for this one day to actually be together and be really in love. You need to spend tons of money and then tell everyone what you did for people to believe you had a great day, and therefore, a great relationship. Then, if you did go all out because that’s what you wanted to do, you’ll hear, “AWWW! That’s so cute! You guys are so cute!” but even that gets annoying.
And on another note, the poor guys! They have to buy dinner, presents, flowers and a bunch of other crap because it’s become the norm nowadays. But if we were all being completely honest here, Chick-fil-A and a movie would make a lot of girls happy. I really think Valentine’s Day is as made up as Black Friday. It’s all a scheme. Some brilliant marketing team changed Valentine’s Day from being about love to being about the amount of money you spend.
Now, what about the people who are single and hate it? IT SUCKS! Even though every other day you’re single, nothing is as bad as being single on Valentine’s Day. You see how everyone else is so in love with his or her significant other. And while you don’t need an extravagant date all of the time, sitting at home with your dog, Netflix, and a tub of ice cream is in no way okay on Valentine’s Day… Although, any other night it would be perfectly fine to me.
I miss Valentine’s Day in the eyes of Kindergarteners. You had to give everyone a card and deciding which card to give to all your classmates was probably the most exciting part about it. Then when everyone was excited about decorating a little mailbox for all our cards and go home with bellies full of candy and hearts full of love.
Valentine’s Day is no longer about the love you have, but how you show it. To be completely honest, who’s business is that but yours anyways?
