Why Halloween Is A Month Long Holiday

Halloween season is here.

Halloween, like Christmas, is it's own season. One night isn't long enough for all the festivities. There's apple bobbing, haunted hay rides, and ghost tours. Not to mention all the prepping for the 31st its self. As soon as October first rolls around and a chill creeps in the air, you know it's time.

1. Candy

Stores put their Halloween stuff out earlier and earlier each year which is fine for costumes and decorations but not for candy. You go to the store to get groceries and leave with three bags of Halloween candy that you'll eat in a week. Then the night before Halloween you'll have to go back to the store and buy more. You complain about it, but Halloween is an excuse to eat candy and not feel bad.

2. Costume planning

First, you have to choose what you want to be for Halloween. This takes approximately two weeks since you're terrible at making decisions and you have to budget. Then you have to find all of the pieces for your costume including accessories. You have to practice your spooky make-up, realize you look ridiculous, and start over until you get it right. Finally, the night before Halloween you change your mind and dress up as the same thing you do every year.

3. Decorating

Even if you're not throwing a Halloween party, it won't feel like Halloween unless you decorate your house/apartment/dorm. So you either go the Halloween store and buy the most inexpensive things or you scroll through Pinterest and spend hours making DIY decorations.

4. Halloween movies

How can you watch all of your favorite Halloween movies if you wait until the day of? The Harry Potter movies alone are longer than 24 hours. So you draw up a schedule where you watch all of your favorite thrillers, horror movies, ghost movies, and Halloween-related movies, and then you immediately ignore the schedule because you're in college and don't have time to watch a movie every single night.

5. Spooky activities

If you want to go to all of the haunted house and scary hay rides that you can, then you're going to want to start as soon as they open. With your normal busy schedule plus your movie schedule, it's going to be hard to schedule in that zombie run that's an hour away from where you live.

6. It's one of the best holidays.

Even if you can't eat candy or you don't like being scared, Halloween is one of the best holidays. It's an excuse to dress up and be someone completely different for a night. It's an excuse to make and eat food that looks like mummies or other monsters. It's an excuse to spend time with friends and celebrate surviving the summer heat.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
