Let me just start by saying I love my grandmother so much. I grew up super close to her, and she's my BFF. I truly believe everyone should befriend their grandparents in general. Here are four reason why.
1. They know more than you and your parents
Grandparents have been around the block a few times, so they can let you in on things even your parents don't know. They have a lot to share and if you're willing to listen, they're more than willing to share what they know with you. For example, my grandma is constantly is telling me the importance of eating healthy and exercise. She also has always told me to pay attention to the details, not just the big picture.
2. They have great taste
My grandma is the reason I love retro and vintage things so much. When I was little, we would get out her old records and listen to them together. In fact, this is something we still occasionally do. Our grandparents grew up with the best stuff: the greatest music, classic movies, wonderful television shows, and some of the most elegant fashion. It truly was the golden age for our golden elders.
3. They love you in a special way
There's an ongoing joke that grandparents will let you get away with anything, while your parents won't. This actually rings pretty true. Not only do they tend to let you get away with more, they love you in a way your parents can't. It's hard for me to describe this kind love; the only word that comes to mind is "different." Typically, grandparents aren't the ones we live with and when we see them, it's fun and special. When you have specific memories with someone, I feel like they hold a lot of significance in your life. Maybe part of the reason they let you get away with anything is because they want to spoil you before they send you home.
4. They need you
You may not think this, but your grandparents need you just as much as you need them. Their friends are getting older and dying, they may be having health problems, or maybe they're just feeling lonely. I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer when I say this, but our grandparents have limited time. Cherish your grandparents and the time you have together. Even a call could turn around their entire day—perhaps even their week! Imagine how happy you could make them with one phone conversation to show you care.
