My Grandpa Is The Best, No Doubt About It

Grandparents are so inspiring.

"Sir!" (My grandpa's name). In the hot, humid summers in Pakistan, I hear my grandma yelling for my grandpa. To come eat, take his medicine, have some chai, or just to spend some time with her. My grandpa never fails to treat her like a queen. Not only does he treat her with respect but he has supported her in all of life’s struggles.

They went through a lot together, from dealing with the consequences of the partition between India and Pakistan to smaller, everyday struggles. But what makes both of them so inspiring is their ability to work through all these issues with grace and love for each other and their family.

Though many men in Pakistan believe in worrying about themselves and treating women improperly, he has always combatted this belief and fought against the norm of Pakistani men. He strives to change the stigma around women and make it easier for them to prosper no matter what they do.

My grandpa taught my mom and her three siblings his traits of benevolence. He made himself into a well-known brain surgeon in Pakistan and even worked for the Prime Minister of Pakistan. The respect he has made for himself motivated his children into becoming hard working members of modern society. He showed them that through hard work and compassion, anything is possible.

My mom passed these values down to her own children and have profoundly shaped the person I am today. No matter what I am going through or what doubts I face in my life, I always remember his values and push myself to follow them. Because of this, I give up any self-doubts and make myself stronger.

Recently, I began to have doubts about my future career path and whether the years of schooling would be worth it in the end; however, talking to my grandparents about these doubts helped me realize that no matter what I end up doing, I can learn to love it through the power of positivity.

I was three months old when my grandpa stitched up my strawberry hemangioma ( a birthmark-like pocket of blood vessels). His kind-hearted nature shaped my childhood and teenage years. He has inspired me to have a gentle manner and be careful with my words. As the youngest girl, I have always felt left out whenever my cousins hung out without me. In these moments my grandpa was my savior. He always sat me down on his lap and told me tales of his younger days. If I wanted to play with dolls, he would do that with me as well. No matter what, he continued to make me feel included and at home even though I was halfway across the world from my home.

Through my grandpa's loving actions he has shown me how a man should treat women, kids, and animals. He inspires me to become a better person and make something of myself. He inspires me to treat people, and myself, in a loving manner. He inspires me to forgive.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
